This study presents new findings on the impact of strain-induced surface phase transformation on the alleviation of hydrogen embrittlement in an austenitic high Mn steel. The results obtained indicate that the strain-induced epsilon-martensite on the surface of the sample significantly reduces adsorbed hydrogen and elongation loss, which is attributed to the lower diffusivity of hydrogen in epsilon-martensite compared to austenite.
This study reports a novel result on the effect of strain-induced superficial phase transformation on the mitigating hydrogen embrittlement of an austenitic high Mn steel. The obtained results revealed that the strain-induced epsilon-martensite on the surface of the sample significantly reduced adsorbed hydrogen and elongation loss which was ascribed to the lower diffusivity of hydrogen in epsilon-martensite compared with austenite.
