Softball pitching mechanics and shoulder injuries: a narrative review

Paul D. Minetos et al.

Summary: Softball is the third most popular women's collegiate sport in the US, but research on the biomechanics of the windmill pitch and its associated shoulder injuries is limited. The windmill pitch puts significant demands on the shoulder and increases the risk of injuries, including rotator cuff, glenoid labrum, and biceps brachii lesions. Pitcher-specific training and whole-body conditioning should be incorporated to minimize the risk of shoulder injuries.

Predicting Shoulder Force to Prevent Injury: Body Fat Mass Increases Shoulder Stress among Pitchers

Kenzie B. Friesen et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between body composition and length with throwing shoulder distraction and anterior force among high school softball pitchers. The results showed that increased body fat mass significantly predicted peak throwing shoulder distraction force, indicating that higher fat mass may increase injury susceptibility.
