Multiscale Monte Carlo simulations of gold nanoparticle dose-enhanced radiotherapy II. Cellular dose enhancement within macroscopic tumor models

Martin P. P. Martinov et al.

Summary: This study used multiscale Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate variations in cytoplasm and nucleus dose enhancement factors over tumor volumes. The results showed that cell/nucleus size, gold particle distribution, gold concentration, and cell position in the tumor all had significant effects on the dose. This highlights the importance of choosing the proper computational model and accounting for intrinsic variations in cell/nucleus size and gold concentration when simulating gold nanoparticle dose-enhanced radiation therapy.

Quantification of gold nanoparticle photon radiosensitization from direct and indirect effects using a complete human genome single cell model based on Geant4

Xiandong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the radiosensitization properties of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and understand the DNA damage induction mechanisms in GNP-aided radiotherapy using a single cell model based on the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. Results showed that photon energy, GNP size, and intracellular distribution are important factors in enhancing double strand breaks (DSBs) from direct and indirect damage, with significant radiosensitization effects due to indirect damage.
