Joint synovial macrophages as a potential target for intra-articular treatment of osteoarthritis-related pain

D. Wang et al.

Summary: Osteoarthritis, as the most common form of joint disease, is a major cause of chronic pain. Recent studies have found that the accumulation of synovial macrophages is associated with pain sensitization in osteoarthritis. However, targeting these macrophages for treatment is challenging due to their complexity and plasticity. Advanced technologies have provided insights into the molecular mechanisms of different subsets of synovial macrophages in osteoarthritis development.

Synergistic Roles of Macrophages and Neutrophils in Osteoarthritis Progression

Ming-Feng Hsueh et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the role of immune cells and cytokines in the pathogenesis and progression of knee osteoarthritis. The results showed that concentrations of elastase and TGF-beta 1 in SF were associated with the severity of OA progression, indicating their predictive potential for disease progression.

Macrophage as a Peripheral Pain Regulator

Risa Domoto et al.

Summary: Neuroimmune crosstalk plays a crucial role in both somatic and visceral pathological pain, with macrophages interacting with neurons to regulate pain signals in peripheral tissues; recent studies have uncovered different characteristics and mediators of macrophages from various sources, highlighting their multitasking abilities in homeostatic conditions.
