Diagnostic Coding Intensity among a Pneumonia Inpatient Cohort Using a Risk-Adjustment Model and Claims Data: A U.S. Population-Based Study

Ruchi Mishra et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel approach to measure coding intensity in diagnosis, which can be evaluated using administrative claims data. The approach takes into account patient-level and facility-level characteristics to adjust for risk, and identifies facility-level factors as important determinants of excess diagnostic coding.

Modeling Coding Intensity of Procedures in a U.S. Population-Based Hip/Knee Arthroplasty Inpatient Cohort Adjusting for Patient- and Facility-Level Characteristics

Nancy G. Rios et al.

Summary: Variations in procedure coding intensity can impact patient care quality and have implications for healthcare facilities and payors. This study proposes a risk-adjusted method to identify over- and under-coding and explores their associations with patient and facility factors. The findings reveal geographic, temporal, and facility-level variations in coding intensity.
