Shear strengthening of RC short columns with CFRP grid-reinforced FRC matrix: Cyclic loading tests

Liying Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the shear behaviors of RC short columns retrofitted with TR-FRC system and found that the strengthened columns had superior shear capacity, deformability, ductility and energy dissipation capacity compared to as-built counterparts. The stiffness degradation of the strengthened columns was further delayed with increased reinforcement ratio of CFRP grid. TR-FRC system remained effective in increasing the shear capacity of RC columns under smaller shear span-to-depth ratio.

Data-driven analysis on axial strength of GFRP-NSC columns based on practical artificial neural network tool

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: Previous research lacks theoretical estimation of the axial load-carrying strength (ALCS) of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite columns. This study introduces two approaches, empirical modeling and artificial neural networks (ANNs), to calculate the ALCS of GFRP normal strength concrete (NSC) columns (GFRP-NSC). The new empirical and ANN models demonstrate higher accuracy in capturing the ALCS compared to previous models.

Mohamed Hechmi El Ouni et al.

Summary: This study investigates the axial compressive effectiveness of jute fibre-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) columns, comparing them with columns reinforced with glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The results show that the GFRP reinforced columns have lower axial strength but higher deformation capacity compared to the steel reinforced columns. Eccentric loading has a significant impact on the axial strength of both types of columns.

Reliability analysis of strength models for short-concrete columns under concentric loading with FRP rebars through Artificial Neural Network

Afaq Ahmad et al.

Summary: The utilization of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in concrete columns has increased over the past decade, with researchers proposing equations to understand their load-carrying capacity. However, there are reservations in current design practices regarding the use of FRP bars as main reinforcement in columns. A study using Artificial Neural Network models and a new proposed equation aims to provide reliability analysis of physical models in predicting the effect of FRP in columns under concentric loading at the ultimate limit state. Results show that the ANN model and proposed equation yield closer results to experimental values compared to counterpart physical models.
