Chiral and non-centrosymmetric effects on the nonlinear wave propagation characteristics of architectured cellular materials

N. Karathanasopoulos et al.

Summary: This work investigates the impact of chirality and non-centrosymmetry on the nonlinear wave propagation characteristics of periodic architectured media. The results show that chiral architectures are more affected by inner kinematic nonlinearities compared to achiral lattice designs. Non-centrosymmetric inner designs also modify the wave propagation attributes of both chiral and achiral lattice patterns, with different frequency ranges affected depending on the lattice type.

Three-dimensional printing of locally resonant carbon-fiber composite metastructures for attenuation of broadband vibration

Koichi Mizukami et al.

Summary: This study introduced locally resonant acoustic metamaterials made of continuous carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics for vibration attenuation. Designing unit cells compatible with high stiffness for low-frequency vibration attenuation was investigated. Numerical analysis showed that the band gap can be widened by an appropriate placement of carbon fibers in the unit cell, resulting in wider band gaps for carbon-fiber reinforced metastructures compared to structures without fibers. The experimental results of fabricated metamaterial samples were in good agreement with the numerical analysis, validating the effectiveness of the design approach.

Vibration characteristics of innovative reentrant-chiral elastic metamaterials

Yingli Li et al.

Summary: An innovative two-dimensional hybrid auxetic elastic metamaterial was proposed for vibration attenuation, with multiple bandgaps at ultra-low frequency. The bandgap and longitudinal elastic wave attenuation were characterized using theoretical and finite element methods. The mechanisms of bandgap formation and frequency-dependent energy flow were investigated through mode shape analysis and iso-frequency contours.

Multiple band gaps for efficient wave attenuation by inertial amplification in periodic functionally graded beams

Jingru Li et al.

Summary: This paper explores the vibration characteristics of functionally graded beams using inertial amplification mechanisms and discusses their applicability in engineering applications. The study finds that multiple stop bands can effectively suppress wave propagation, aiding in vibration and sound reduction.

Inertial amplification induced band gaps in corrugated-core sandwich panels

Chenyang Xi et al.

Summary: A four-bar inertial amplification mechanism was proposed to enhance the low-frequency vibration reduction capability of corrugated-core sandwich panels (CSPs). Numerical studies showed that CSPs with this mechanism attached can achieve wide bandgaps in the low-frequency range, providing broader band attenuation compared to CSPs with local resonators attached.
