A computational framework for multi-stability analysis of laminated shells

Zengtao Kuang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a numerical framework for stability analysis of composite shells, which can efficiently compute nonlinear equilibrium paths and critical points and accurately assess the stability of the structure. It is found that accurate approximation of the strain energy is crucial for predicting the stability of composite shells.

Magneto-active elastic shells with tunable buckling strength

Dong Yan et al.

Summary: Shell buckling, traditionally seen as a catastrophic phenomenon to be avoided for engineering structures, is found to be subcritical and highly sensitive to imperfections. This study presents a mechanism to dynamically tune the buckling strength of shells by exploiting the coupling between mechanics and magnetism. By using pressurized spherical shells made of hard-magnetic elastomer, the researchers demonstrate how buckling pressure can be adjusted via magnetic actuation, supported by a theoretical model in excellent agreement with experiments.

Bio-chemo-mechanical theory of active shells

Sifan Yin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a bio-chemo-mechanical theoretical framework to model complex morphologies and dynamic behaviors in living thin structures. Hopf and Pitchfork bifurcations induced by chemomechanical feedback are found to be the primary mechanisms triggering pattern formation. The proposed numerical scheme can track the dynamic pattern evolution beyond the stationary state.

Elastic Instabilities Govern the Morphogenesis of the Optic Cup

Jeong-Ho Lee et al.

Summary: The study reveals that elastic instabilities play a crucial role in the morphogenesis of the eye during development, especially in the formation of the optic cup. If the optic vesicle is too slender, it may cause buckling and break axisymmetry, thus hindering normal development.

Emergence of structure in columns of grains and elastic loops

Arman Guerra et al.

Summary: Friction and elasticity are key factors affecting the stability of rock and loop structures, with a model derived to understand their relationship. Higher friction leads to larger stable grain-grain and grain-loop contact angles, resulting in a simple function for the frictional critical spacing, while higher bending rigidity enables the loops to better contain the hydrostatic pressure of the grains.

Mechanochemical induction of wrinkling morphogenesis on elastic shells

Andrei Zakharov et al.

Summary: The article discusses a minimal mechanochemical model based on cell shape changes induced by diffusible biomolecules, and computational simulations reveal chemical and three-dimensional deformation patterns under different concentration thresholds for cell shape change. The mechanochemically coupled patterning dynamics are distinct from those driven by purely mechanical or purely chemical factors.
