On the enhanced wear resistance of ultra-coarse WC-Co cemented carbides by WCoB addition

Xuemei Liu et al.

Summary: The addition of WCoB significantly improves the wear resistance of ultra-coarse cemented carbides, mainly due to the high hardness of WCoB balancing the stress distribution within WC grains, reducing the likelihood of fracture and pull-out during the wear process.

Extraordinary high-temperature mechanical properties in binder-free nanopolycrystalline WC ceramic

Hongfeng Dong et al.

Summary: The binder-free nanopolycrystalline WC ceramic obtained by high-pressure and high-temperature sintering exhibits excellent mechanical properties at both room temperature and high temperature up to 1000 degrees C. It maintains a considerably high Vicker hardness at high temperature, showing outstanding thermo-mechanical stability superior to typical technical ceramics like SiC, Si3N4, Al2O3, etc. The nanocrystalline grains with dislocations and low-energy E2 grain boundaries contribute to its exceptional high-temperature mechanical properties.

Effects of Al2O3-ZrO2 content on the densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties of cemented tungsten carbides

Jingmao Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the increase in Al2O3-ZrO2 content affected the grain size of WC and the temperature of the densification process. At the same time, the hardness of the composite material decreased while the indentation fracture toughness increased.

Nano-ceramic replacing cobalt in cemented carbide as binder phase: Is it feasible?

Jialin Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the feasibility of using nano ceramic as a binder in WC-based cemented carbide was explored. Near-full densifications were achieved for WC-6Al(2)O(3), WC-6ZrO(2), and WC-6MgO nanocomposite carbides through hot-pressing sintering. The nano-sized ceramic binders were located along the grain boundaries and within the WC matrix grains, enhancing the mechanical responses of the materials. The main toughening mechanisms included crack deflection, bridging, and branching. Stress-induced transformation toughening played a significant role in improving fracture toughness in WC with ZrO2 binder. Nano ceramic phases as alternative binders to Co provided greater freedom in tailoring the microstructure, stability, and properties of cemented carbides.

Understanding microstructure-mechanical properties relationship in ZrO2-SiO2 nanocrystalline glass-ceramics: The effect of ZrO2 content

Le Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of the content of crystalline phase on the mechanical properties of ZrO2-SiO2 nanocrystalline glass-ceramics (NCGCs). The results showed that NCGCs with 65 mol% ZrO2 had the highest flexural strength, while increasing the ZrO2 content beyond 65 mol% led to a decrease in strength.

Experimental and numerical investigations of micro-meso damage evolution for a WC/Co-type tool material

Y. Schneider et al.

Summary: Commercial Co/WC/diamond composites with 90vol.% Co exhibit both ductile and quasi-brittle behavior depending on the diamond portion and local morphology. This study investigated the local damage evolution in relation to microstructural features using real and artificial microstructures. The findings contribute to the understanding of WC-Co type tool materials and offer valuable data for future research.

Toughening cemented carbides by phase transformation of zirconia

Wentao Jiang et al.

Summary: By incorporating yttria partially stabilized zirconia into WC-Co cemented carbides, the hardness and fracture toughness can be simultaneously improved, mainly attributed to the stress-induced phase transformation of tetragonal ZrO2. ZrO2 particles dispersed homogeneously in the WC skeleton and had good interfacial bonding with both WC and Co phases, contributing to the enhancement of the mechanical properties of cemented carbides.
