Microstructure and hot deformation behavior of the Cu-Sn-Ni-Zn-Ti (-Y) alloy

Deye Xu et al.

Summary: The effects of Y addition on microstructure evolution in Cu-Sn-Ni-Zn-Ti alloys during hot deformation were investigated. Hot deformation experiments were conducted using a Gleeble-1500 simulator, deforming Cu-Sn-Ni-Zn-Ti and Cu-Sn-Ni-Zn-Ti-Y alloys at temperatures ranging from 550 to 950 degrees C and strain rates of 0.001-10 s-1. Constitutive equations were constructed and the hot deformation activation energy of the two alloys was calculated. It was found that the addition of 0.1 wt% rare earth Y element can promote dynamic recrystallization based on analysis of true stress-strain curves and electron backscattered diffraction images. Pole figures showed a texture change from {011}(112) Brass texture and {001}(100) Cube texture to {111}(211) R texture after Y addition. The microstructure and precipitates of the Cu-Sn-Ni-Zn-Ti alloy were analyzed, revealing the presence of Cu4Ti precipitates. Continuous dynamic recrystallization and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization were identified as the main recrystallization mechanisms in the Cu-Sn-Ni-Zn-Ti alloy.

Influence of local thermal cycle on the lattice and microstructure evolution of twin-wire directed energy deposition-arc fabricated equiatomic NiTi alloy

Andrew Bulla et al.

Summary: The authors investigated the effect of repeated heating cycles on the phase and crystal structure of a few layers at a time. Equiatomic NiTi alloy was additively manufactured using twin-wire directed energy deposition-arc (TW-DED-arc). Microstructure characterization revealed the incorporation of silicon preventing the formation of NiTi2 and the existence of two types of B2 austenite in the matrix. Mechanical testing showed a maximum ultimate tensile stress of 782.5 MPa with a fracture surface indicative of quasi-cleavage failure.

Summary: This research reveals the mechanisms of material densification, element diffusion, interfacial reaction, crystal growth, and performance enhancement in multi-material laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) through experiments and simulations. Fully dense multi-material parts with strong metallurgical bonding and gradually changing microhardness at the interface were achieved by optimizing the printing parameters. The laser printed TiB2/Ti6Al4V multi-material parts exhibited excellent flexural performance with improved strength and ductility. This study is significant for the manufacturing and strengthening of ceramic/metal multi-material using laser additive manufacturing technology.

Microstructure and fatigue behavior of 24CrNiMo low alloy steel prepared by selective laser melting

X. Cui et al.

Summary: The microstructure and fatigue performance of 24CrNiMo low alloy steel by selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated. The SLM sample showed a relatively high fatigue strength due to the excellent combination of strength and plasticity. Manufacturing defects and the matrix could act as crack initiation sites, with the former being divided into surface and interior defects. The location of original cracks had a greater impact on fatigue lifetime than the type of original cracks.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti basic bionic gradient heterogeneous alloy prepared by multi-wire arc additive manufacturing

P. F. Jiang et al.

Summary: Inspired by biological gradient structure, Ti basic gradient heterogeneous alloy component from TC11 alloy to TC4 alloy was successfully fabricated using multi-wire arc additive manufacturing (MWAAM). The chemical mixing, phase and microstructure evolution, microhardness distribution, and tensile property of the Ti basic gradient heterogeneous alloy were investigated. The results showed that the alloy elements formed a long-distance gradient concentration distribution during the transition between two different titanium alloys. The diffraction peak intensity of the Ti basic gradient heterogeneous alloy in the gradient region remained unchanged. The microstructure of the alloy mainly consisted of lamellar alpha(P), acicular alpha(S), equiaxed alpha(S), and beta matrix. The morphology of the alpha(S) phase varied due to the wetting state of the second solid phase and grain boundary. Moreover, the microstructure of the alpha phase was significantly influenced by the gradient distribution of alloy composition. The gradient heterogeneous alloy component exhibited high bonding strength, with an average ultimate tensile strength close to TC4 alloy and approximately 85% of TC11 alloy.
