Heat generation, plastic deformation and residual stresses in friction stir welding of aluminium alloy

Omar S. Salih et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel three-dimensional fully coupled thermo-mechanical finite element model based on the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to simulate the friction stir welding (FSW) process. The model successfully captured the evolution of temperature, plastic deformation, and residual stresses and was validated with experimental testing. The results revealed that the tool rotation speed significantly influenced temperature evolution and plastic deformation, with higher plastic deformation resulting in improved weld quality.

Mechanical Properties and Microstructure Evolution of Mg-Gd Alloy during Aging Treatment

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: In this work, the evolution of precipitations in a Mg-10Gd alloy was systematically studied based on atomic-scaled TEM and HAADF-STEM observations. The transition mechanism from G.P. Zone to beta, beta', beta(T) and beta(M) was proposed, along with their relationships with mechanical properties. The blocking effect of precipitations significantly improved the strength, according to the Orowan mechanism. The elliptic cylinder shaped beta' phase with a base-centered orthorhombic lattice structure provided significant strengthening effects, enhancing the hardness and ultimate tensile strength.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of repair welds of low-pressure sand-cast Mg-Y-RE-Zr alloy by tungsten inert gas welding

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of repairing sand-cast Mg-4Y-3RE-0.5Zr alloy using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding at different welding currents. The results showed that defect-free and visually pleasing repaired joints could be achieved at 170 and 190 A. The tensile strength, joint efficiency, and elongation of the repaired joint reached high levels. However, at currents above 190 A, serious defects in the heat-affected zone resulted in a weakening of the joint.

Summary: Defect-free Mg-10Gd alloy welded joints with high tensile strength were obtained via electron beam weld. The microstructure of joints under different heat inputs was inconsistent. The fusion zone maintained high strength while softening occurred in the heat-affected zone, leading to fractures. Multiple strengthening mechanisms existed in the as-weld joint, with varying ratios in different regions.

Exceptional grain refinement of Mg-Zr master alloy treated by tungsten inert gas arc re-melting with ultra-high frequency pulses

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: The distribution of Zr in a commercial Mg-30Zr master alloy can be modified through tungsten inert gas arc re-melting with ultra-high frequency pulses, leading to a substantial reduction in grain size. The approach allows for refinement of Zr particle size and obtaining higher contents of soluble Zr and nanoscale Zr particles. This new method proposes a new approach to the design and fabrication of high-efficiency grain refiners.

Microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanisms of Mg-6Gd-4Y-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy during hot spinning and aging treatment

Xueze Jin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the optimized spinning temperature range of Mg-6Gd-4Y-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy and the microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanisms during hot spinning and aging treatment. The research shows that the multi-pass heating and deformation during hot spinning influence the microstructure and the dominant strengthening mechanisms include solid solution strengthening, grain boundary strengthening, and shearing strengthening. The precipitation of gamma' phase affects the precipitation density of beta' phase and reduces the age hardening response in spun tube compared to extruded alloy.

Influence of arc constriction current frequency on tensile properties and microstructural evolution of tungsten inert gas welded thin sheets of aerospace alloy

Tushar Sonar et al.

Summary: The investigation focused on studying the influence of arc constriction current frequency (ACCF) on the tensile properties and microstructural evolution of aerospace Alloy 718 sheets joined by constricted arc TIG (CA-TIG) welding process. Results showed that ACCF of 4 kHz led to superior tensile properties while ACCF above 12 kHz caused severe grain growth and evolution of coarser Laves phase in fusion zone. Alloy 718 welds exhibited more obvious Nb segregation and Laves phase formation at higher levels of ACCF, ultimately reducing the tensile properties of joints.

Research on the post-weld heat treatment of TIG repair welded joint of sand-cast Mg-Y-RE-Zr alloy

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution of TIG repair welded joints and the effect of progressive solution treatments on grain coarsening. By proposing a two-step progressive T4 treatment method, abnormal grain coarsening was avoided while maintaining excellent comprehensive tensile properties. The progressive T4 treatment at lower temperatures effectively promoted the dissolution of eutectics and contributed to the aging hardening process by precipitating the evenly dispersed beta ' phase in the matrix.

Achieving low-temperature Zr alloying for microstructural refinement of sand-cast Mg-Gd-Y alloy by employing zirconium tetrachloride

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of Zr alloying in sand-cast GW83 alloy at a low temperature by applying ZrCl4, which resulted in higher Zr yield compared to using Mg-Zr master alloy. The interaction process between ZrCl4 and Mg melt, as well as the grain refinement mechanisms, were systematically studied. The addition of ZrCl4 led to a decrease in average grain size due to heterogeneous nuclei of Zr particles and constitutional supercooling provided by solute Zr, however, a higher addition of ZrCl4 resulted in the generation of RECl3 inclusions that degraded the mechanical properties of the alloy.
