Heterogeneous grain size and enhanced hardness by precipitation of the BCC particles in medium entropy Fe-Ni-Cr alloys

Guanghui Yang et al.

Summary: The precipitation of Cr-rich BCC particles was found to be dependent on the chemical composition of Fe-Cr-Ni medium entropy alloys. These particles played a significant role in the hardening of the alloys. The different precipitation behaviors at two temperatures resulted in variations in grain size distribution and hardness.

Advancing strength and counteracting embrittlement by displacive transformation in heterogeneous high-entropy alloys containing sigma phase

Wenjun Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel strategy is developed to mitigate the embrittlement of sigma phase particles in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) by utilizing displacive transformation and heterogeneous structures. The deformation behavior study reveals that the displacive transformation from face-centered cubic (FCC) to hexagonal close packed (HCP) phase effectively suppresses the propagation of microcracks in brittle sigma particles and contributes to high work hardening behavior. The transformation induced stress-relaxation around the regions containing brittle sigma particles in heterogeneously structured HEAs results in ultimate tensile strengths as high as -1.2 GPa while maintaining a ductility up to -50%.

Significant enhancement in tensile strength and work hardening rate in CoCrFeMnNi by adding TiAl particles via selective laser melting

Xintian Wang et al.

Summary: By adding TiAl powder particles into CoCrFeMnNi HEA and processing with selective laser melting, the developed microstructure led to enhancements in 0.2% yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and strain hardening rates. The presence of microstructural features such as L1(2) domains, intragranular precipitates, and grain boundary precipitates played a key role in improving the mechanical properties of the samples.

Crack-resistant σ/FCC interfaces in the Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 high entropy alloy with the dispersed σ-phase

Donggyun You et al.

Summary: The morphology and size of the a-phase in Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10 non-equiatomic high entropy alloy play a significant role in its mechanical properties. Fine sigma-precipitates can increase strength without severe ductility loss, while coarsened sigma-phase leads to early failure. Controlling the size and dispersion of the sigma-phase to increase sigma/FCC interfaces is essential for developing HEAs with an excellent strength-ductility combination and damage tolerance.

Deformation-induced grain boundary segregation mediated high-strain rate superplasticity in medium entropy alloy

Peyman Asghari-Rad et al.

Summary: Superplasticity, especially high-strain rate superplasticity (HSRS) at a strain rate equal to or higher than 10(-2) s(-1), shows significant technological potential in the shape-forming of engineering materials. The formation of liquid phase at grain boundaries/interfaces can assist HSRS, and designing grain boundary segregation of a low melting temperature element in multi-principle element alloys (MPEAs) can promote HSRS by partial melting. This study demonstrated the trace of liquid phase in Al0.3CoCrNi MPEA and the possibility of tailoring microstructure for promoting HSRS in high-strength materials by grain boundary segregation engineering.

Hetero-deformation-induced strengthening behavior of as-annealed Co30Cr30Fe18Ni18Mo4 high entropy alloy by metastable a phase

Xuefeng Gao et al.

Summary: Multiple deformation mechanisms have been utilized to overcome the strength-ductility trade-off in high entropy alloys (HEAs), especially at low temperatures and deformation conditions. In this study, a multiphase heterostructure Co30Cr30Fe18Ni18Mo4 HEA was developed at moderate temperatures and short time annealing treatment to trigger multiple deformation mechanisms at room temperature. The as-annealed alloy exhibited high yield strength and applicable plasticity with the increase of secondary phase, which was induced by precipitation strengthening and back-stress strengthening. TWIP, SFs, and HDI strengthening multiple deformation mechanisms contributed to improving strength.

Hierarchical precipitates, sequential deformation-induced phase transformation, and enhanced back stress strengthening of the micro-alloyed high entropy alloy

Guanghui Yang et al.

Summary: The annealing time-dependence microstructures and deformation mechanisms of the novel face-centered cubic Fe49.5Mn30Co10Cr10C0.2Ti0.1V0.1 Mou HEA are reported in this study. Three types of precipitates, sigma-phase, Cr-rich MC-type carbides, and nano-scale (Ti, V, Mo)C, are present after cold-rolling and annealing. The hierarchical precipitates can lead to sluggish recrystallization and grain growth. The deformation mechanisms change with annealing time, with dislocation glide, deformation twinning, and deformation-induced epsilon phase observed for short annealing times, and a more complex transformation for longer annealing times. The material annealed for 10 hours shows superior strain hardening capacity and strength-ductility combination.

Relation of phase fraction to superplastic behavior of multi-principal element alloy with a multi-phase structure

Nhung Thi-Cam Nguyen et al.

Summary: An Al0.3CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy was annealed in two conditions to differentiate the phase fraction of nano-scaled B2 and sigma precipitates in FCC microstructure. The alloy exhibited distinct superplastic performance, with grain boundary sliding mechanism and accommodation of intragranular dislocations playing a dominant role. Furthermore, increasing the phase fraction of B2 and sigma phases was found to be beneficial for promoting high-strain rate superplasticity by limiting grain growth.

Summary: The CoCrxCuFeMnNiV high-entropy alloy was prepared via vacuum arc smelting, and the effect of different Cr contents on its microstructure evolution and mechanical properties was evaluated. It was found that adding Cr resulted in the formation of sigma phase, which significantly enhanced the strength but reduced the plasticity of the alloy.

Role of recrystallization and second phases on mechanical properties of (CoCrFeMnNi)95.2Al3.2Ti1.6 high entropy alloy

Jiyeon Kang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on microstructures and mechanical properties of high entropy alloy (CoCrFeMnNi)95.2Al3.2Ti1.6 after homogenization and cold-rolling, followed by annealing at various temperatures. The annealing process revealed the presence of different phases based on temperature, leading to changes in grain size, strength, and ductility. Fully recrystallized materials at 900°C exhibited lower grain size but higher ductility due to second phase particles, impacting the yield strength significantly.
