Local slip resistances in equal-molar MoNbTi multi-principal element alloy

Shuozhi Xu et al.

Summary: In this work, local slip resistances in equal-molar MoNbTi multi-principal element alloy are calculated via molecular static simulations. The results show that the screw-to-edge ratio in the slip resistance is reduced by one order of magnitude in MoNbTi compared to that of any pure reference metal for the same type of slip plane, suggesting that BCC MPEAs could deform by a multiplicity of slip modes.

Emission of Dislocations from Grain Boundaries and Its Role in Nanomaterials

James C. M. Li et al.

Summary: The Frank-Read model is widely accepted for generating dislocations in metals and alloys, but Li proposed an alternate mechanism of grain boundary sources for dislocations. The article reviews Li's model, supporting evidence, and the role of grain boundary sources in nanomaterials.

Direct observation of the grain boundaries acting as dislocation sources in nanocrystalline platinum

Xiaochen Li et al.

Summary: This study used in situ TEM observations to directly reveal dislocation nucleation at grain boundaries in nanocrystalline metals. The findings contradict the common hypothesis predicted by molecular dynamic simulations, showing that complete dislocations can be emitted from grain boundaries in small-grained structures.

The hidden structure dependence of the chemical life of dislocations

X. Zhou et al.

Summary: Dislocations are one-dimensional defects in crystals that affect material deformation, mechanical response, and transport properties. They lead to severe lattice distortion and solute segregation, resulting in localized spatial variations in chemistry that determine microstructure and material behavior. Recent advances in atomic-scale characterization methods have revealed a wide variety of defect-specific solute decoration patterns, offering potential for compositional and structural nano-scale design of advanced materials.

Precipitation in reactor pressure vessel steels under ion and neutron irradiation: On the role of segregated network dislocations

G. R. Odette et al.

Summary: The study quantitatively analyzed the solute segregation and precipitation on dislocations in irradiated low alloy RPV steels. By utilizing a broad thermodynamic framework and atom probe tomography, the effects of various thermodynamic and non-equilibrium perturbative effects under irradiation were evaluated for the first time. The research provided insights into the mechanisms of segregation and precipitation in irradiated RPV steels, shedding light on both RIS and thermodynamically driven processes.

Atomistic simulations of dislocation mobility in refractory high-entropy alloys and the effect of chemical short-range order

Sheng Yin et al.

Summary: The presence of short-range order influences the mobility of dislocations in high-entropy alloys, with edge dislocations being enhanced and double-kink nucleation in screw dislocations being reduced. A cross-slip locking mechanism is observed for the motion of screws, providing extra strengthening for refractory high-entropy alloy system.
