Titanium dioxide functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and silver nanoparticles reinforced polyurethane nanofibers as a novel scaffold for tissue engineering applications

Taha Umair Wani et al.

Summary: This study reports the fabrication of polyurethane-based bone regenerative nanofibers reinforced with TiO2-MWCNT composites and harboring Ag NPs for bacterial inhibition. The nanofibers exhibited smooth morphology with an average size ranging from 800 to 1200 nm. Various techniques confirmed the presence of nanofiber components and demonstrated improved hydrophilicity. These Ag-impregnated fibers effectively controlled bacterial growth, showed biocompatibility, and supported high cell growth and attachment compared to pristine nanofibers.

Amani Gabriel Kaningini et al.

Summary: This study synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) using leaf extracts of Athrixia phylicoides and evaluated their antibacterial, antioxidant, and cytotoxicity properties. The results showed that the CuO-NPs exhibited strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity, while being non-toxic to human cells. Therefore, they could be a potential alternative for treating bacterial infections and oxidative stress-induced diseases.

Hybrid materials based on chitosan functionalized with green synthesized copper nanoparticles: Physico-chemical and antimicrobial analysis

Diego Alejandro Marin-Silva et al.

Summary: Recently, the development of antimicrobial materials has been a focus of attention. Incorporating copper nanoparticles (NpCu) into a chitosan matrix is a viable strategy to prevent their oxidation. The nanocomposite films (CHCu) showed improved tensile strength, decreased elongation at break, lower solubility, and reduced swelling compared to chitosan films (control). These nanocomposites also exhibited excellent antibacterial capacity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and the antibacterial mechanism involved the interaction of chitosan with bacterial membranes and the diffusion of NpCu into the cells. These materials have potential applications in various fields including biology, medicine, and food packaging.

An overview on nanoparticles used in biomedicine and their cytotoxicity

Mohammad Nikzamir et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology involves developing engineered nanoparticles for biomedical applications, which have unique physicochemical properties but can exhibit cytotoxicity causing concerns for clinical applications. To be successful in biomedical applications, nanoparticles must be non-toxic and biocompatible, as their small size allows them to easily enter the body and potentially reach sensitive organs. The cytotoxicity of nanoparticles depends on various factors such as size, shape, charge, chemistry, and modifications, with the main mechanism being the generation of reactive oxygen species leading to oxidative stress and cell damage. Various commonly used nanoparticles in biomedicine, including carbon-based nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, and quantum dots, are discussed along with their possible cytotoxicity mechanisms.
