Probing rare earth segregation in steels

Hanghang Liu et al.

Summary: The challenge of characterizing the precise sites of rare earth (RE) atoms in steels has been solved by identifying the distribution of RE atoms through in situ oxidation of these active atoms in dendritic regions. Electron microscopy with near-atomic resolution can be used to identify RE retention or trapping in alloys but fails to provide reliable results in steel due to the extremely low solid solubility of RE atoms. First-principles calculations confirmed that dendritic interfaces can serve as trapping sites for solute RE atoms.

Discovery and identification of arsenic removal products from molten steel by adding rare earth

Hongpo Wang et al.

Summary: The use of scrap steel is expected to increase in order to reduce carbon emissions. However, the enrichment of residual elements in steel production during recycling has become a problem. This study investigates the formation of arsenic compounds in La-added molten steel, identifying two compounds - La-S-As and La-As - for the first time. These compounds mainly consist of La-S-As, La-As, and LaAsO4, with La4S3As identified as a solid solution resulting from the replacement of S atoms with As in LaS. La4S3As started to form in molten steel and aggregated to generate large clusters that floated up mostly, providing a new strategy for reducing residual elements in molten steel represented by arsenic.

Theoretical calculation and experimental investigation on NbC refined by CeAlO3in hypereutectic Fe-Cr-C-Nb hardfacing alloy

Lixiang Rao et al.

Summary: The interface properties between CeAlO3 and NbC in hypereutectic Fe-Cr-C-Nb hardfacing alloy were investigated through first-principles calculations and experiments, revealing that CeAlO3 can act as a heterogeneous nucleation site for refining NbC. The study demonstrated that the addition of CeAlO3 can enhance the refinement of NbC phases in the alloy.

Microstructure characterization and its relationship with impact toughness of C-Mn and high strength low alloy steel weld metals - a review

J. C. F. Jorge et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the influence of microstructural characteristics of steel weld metals on impact toughness, indicating that acicular ferrite may not always be the main contributor to toughness. Therefore, complementary techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EBSD are necessary to analyze parameters like recrystallization, microstructural constituents, microphases and inclusions. The methodology proposed in the study is effective in analyzing the microstructure/toughness relationship and explaining the impact toughness behavior of weld metals with varying ultimate tensile strength.

The carbides, tensile properties, and work-hardening behavior of annealed H13 die steels with varied yttrium contents

Rongchun Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the micro-alloying of rare-earth yttrium (Y) was used to improve the fracture behavior and work-hardening ability of H13 die steel by modifying Cr23C6 and VC carbides. The addition of Y led to interruption and sphericalization of Cr23C6 carbides, increased quantity of VC carbides, and higher work-hardening exponent. Fractographic studies showed a transition from cleavage failure to ductile rupture with increasing Y content, but excess Y content resulted in detrimental inclusion clusters in dimples.

Effects of rare earth modifying inclusions on the pitting corrosion of 13Cr4Ni martensitic stainless steel

Changgang Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the pitting corrosion behavior of martensitic stainless steel with and without rare earth modification in NaCl solution. The presence of different inclusions in BASE and REM steels affected the pitting resistance, with REM steel showing both increased susceptibility to pitting nucleation and improved repassivation. The concentration of rare earth elements in the steel matrix influenced the number and size of inclusions, ultimately affecting the overall pitting corrosion resistance.

Effect of rare earth oxide on the crystallization behavior of CaO-Al2O3-based mold flux for rare earth heat-resistant steel continuous casting

Jie Qi et al.

Summary: The new CaO-Al2O3-based mold flux with Ce2O3 addition showed reduced critical cooling rate and initial crystallization temperature, as well as more stable distribution of initial crystallization temperature. Ce2O3 incorporation slightly increased crystallization incubation time and inhibited isothermal crystallization process. The formation of CaCeAlO4 phase was observed, contributing to the inhibition of CaO crystallization and reduction in viscosity and breaking temperature.
