The evaluation of microstructure of carbon/carbon composites generated by ultra-high temperature treatment towards excellent electromagnetic interference shielding property

Kun Xue et al.

Summary: This study raises the treatment temperature of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites and explores the influence of micromorphology on the mechanical and electromagnetic shielding properties of materials using an innovative image recognition method. The results indicate that increasing the treatment temperature leads to increased porosity and improved graphitization degree of the composites. Moreover, the electromagnetic shielding efficiency (SE) of the composites shows a consistent trend with electrical conductivity, and reflection is identified as the dominant shielding mechanism. Comparative analysis of comprehensive data suggests that C/C composites have the potential to be a new generation of satellites with electromagnetic shielding material.

Irradiation induced interface modification of carbon fiber/carbon composite revealed by in-situ transmission electron microscopy

Shanglei Feng et al.

Summary: This study used a high-voltage electron microscope to monitor the in-situ irradiation effect on the fiber and matrix interfaces of C/C composites induced by electron beam. The results showed that their finer microstructures exhibited two different evolutions. Under electron irradiation, the strong bonding interface showed no obvious boundary between the fiber and matrix, while the weak bonding interface had a transition layer composed of amorphous materials. The electron irradiation also caused the banded microcrystals at the longitudinal interface of the fibers to become amorphous, expanded the substrate surface, and gradually closed microcracks. Nano indenter experiments confirmed the significantly enhanced mechanical properties of the fiber and matrix induced by electron irradiation.

Multiple cyclic ablation behaviors of multilayer ZrC-TaC coating with ZrC-SiC interface layer

Dou Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the improvement of multiple cyclic ablation performance of ablation resistant coating through the design and fabrication of (ZrC-TaC)/(ZrC-SiC) multilayer coating. The results showed that the linear variation rate of the multilayer coating decreased by 75% compared to the monolayer ZrC-TaC coating, which was attributed to the control of low Ta/Zr ratio to increase the temperature resistance of Zr-Ta-O oxide film and the interfacial crack deflection induced by the ZrC-SiC interface layer.

Ultra-high temperature ablation behaviour of 2.5D SiC/SiC under an oxy-acetylene torch

Jinkang Du et al.

Summary: The ablation characteristics of 2.5D SiC/SiC composites under ultra-high temperatures were studied using an oxy-acetylene torch flame. The results showed that the ablation region could be divided into three regions based on the distribution characteristics of SiO2. The ablation rate decreased linearly with time and the fracture of the fiber underwent three processes: Necking, fracture, and stable retreat.

Exploring Hf-Ta-O precipitation upon ablation of Hf-Ta-Si-C coating on C/C composites

Mingde Tong et al.

Summary: A Hf-Ta-Si-C coating was fabricated by chemical vapor co-deposition to improve the ablation resistance of C/C composites. The ablation resistance, smoothness, and integrity of the coating were improved by introducing Ta. Hf and Ta atoms tend to gather together at high temperature. The precipitation reaction of Hf-Ta-O can accelerate the formation of a smooth and intact oxide layer, playing a positive role in protecting C/C composites.

Recent Progress in 1D Nanostructures Reinforced Carbon/Carbon Composites

Xuemin Yin et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix composites are promising materials for high-temperature thermal structures in aerospace fields. However, sharp or thin-walled composites often experience a decline in mechanical performance due to the cutting of carbon fibers during machining. To overcome this issue, various one-dimensional nanoreinforcements have been introduced to enhance the mechanical and functional properties of C/C composites. This review summarizes the latest research activities and provides future research prospects in this field.

Effect of temperature gradient on the ablation and flexural behavior of C/C-ZrC composites

Tianyu Liu et al.

Summary: A new ablation condition was designed to investigate the effect of temperature gradient on the ablation and flexural behavior of C/C-ZrC composites. The volume change caused by ZrC -> ZrO2 and the ZrO2 crystalline transformation were beneficial for releasing internal stress, thereby contributing to the higher flexural strength retention of the composites.

Improvement of ablation resistance of CVD-HfC/SiC coating on hemisphere shaped C/C composites by introducing diffusion interface

Mingde Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, the bonding strength and ablation resistance of HfC based coating on hemisphere shaped C/C composites were optimized by introducing a HfC-SiC diffusion interface. The results showed a significant increase in bonding strength and a reduction in linear and mass ablation rates after introducing HfC-SiC diffusion. The enhancement of ablation resistance was attributed to the adhesion effect of Hf-Si-O glass phase and the increase of bonding strength in the outer layer.
