The microstructural sensitivity of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect in an Al-Mg alloy with a heterogeneous microstructure distribution was investigated. It was found that the microstructural changes induced by friction-stir processing enhanced the PLC phenomenon by increasing the magnitudes of stress oscillations, localized strain, and the width of deformation bands.
In this work, the microstructural sensitivity of the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect was examined using an Al-Mg alloy with a heterogeneous microstructure distribution. It was shown that the microstructural changes induced by friction-stir processing have promoted an increase in the magnitudes of the stress oscillations, localized strain, and the width of deformation bands, thus enhancing the PLC phenomenon.
