Using microfluidic technology to prepare octogen high-energy microspheres containing copper-aluminum composite particles with enhanced combustion performance

Dongxu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, copper/aluminum microspheres with good combustion performance were prepared using droplet microfluidic technology and binder. The microspheres had regular spherical morphology and uniform particle size distribution, and the crystal form of each particle was not destroyed by microfluidic technology. The introduction of copper promoted the thermal decomposition of high energy microdroplets and reduced the mechanical sensitivity of the prepared microspheres. The copper/aluminum microspheres exhibited excellent and stable combustion performance, and the addition of copper increased the combustion speed compared to the microspheres only containing nano aluminum. This technology represents an inexpensive and simple way to improve on existing aluminized explosives.

Core-shell structured nAl@F-x nanocomposite: preparation and their improved combustion performances

Dongyu Hao et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel nAl@F-x nanocomposite with a core-shell structure was prepared via a self-assembly approach. The thickness of the F-x layer could be easily adjusted by varying the amount of PFOA used. The nanocomposite exhibited enhanced combustion and thermal reaction performances due to the synergistic effect between F-x and nAl, as well as the formation of a mesoporous structure during the combustion process.

Al-Cu Powder Oxidation Kinetics during Heating in Air

A. G. Korotkikh et al.

Summary: The use of nanosized metal powders shows great potential in the development of modern energy compositions due to their high reactivity and intense heat release. This study investigated the thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry of Alex aluminum nanopowders and Al-Cu compound, and found that they undergo intense oxidation at 600℃. The activation energy of these nanopowders depends on the degree of conversion and ranges between 78-307 and 99-430 kJ/mol, respectively.

Perfluoroalkyl Acid-Functionalized Aluminum Nanoparticles for Fluorine Fixation and Energy Generation

Wanjun Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface functionalization of aluminum nanoparticle using perfluoroalkyl acids improved its energy performances and fluorine fixation ratio. The combustion characteristics and heat release of nAl/PFAAs were enhanced in different atmospheres. The reaction mechanism involved the corrosion of oxide layer, generation of fluorocarbons, and fluorination of exposed AI.

Libor Kovarik et al.

Summary: This review critically examines the crystallography and structural complexity of high temperature treated transition aluminas, including the crystallography of delta- and theta-Al2O3 polymorphs, structural intergrowth and disorder accommodation, overall microstructure complexity, as well as challenges and recent progress in quantifying the structure at ensemble level. The review also discusses the surface properties of high temperature treated Al2O3 and their implications for understanding attributes relevant to heterogeneous catalysis.

Adhesion of Nafion for advanced proton exchange membrane fuel cell architectures under low fabrication temperature

P. -K. Sun et al.

Summary: Nafion has been used as a critical material for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, with the ability to form hermetic seals by laminating Nafion to itself and other materials. Understanding cohesion/adhesion is essential for sealing technology, as bonding strength increases dramatically with processing temperature and the presence of an aluminum layer. Characterization techniques like T-peel test, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to evaluate the surface chemistry and bonding mechanisms.

Surface modifications of plasma treated aluminum particles and direct evidence for altered reactivity

Kelsea K. Miller et al.

Summary: This study used atmospheric pressure plasmas to reduce the aluminum oxide shell, with argon plasma treatment resulting in surface hydration and helium plasma treatment showing no surface hydration. Both plasma-treated aluminum particles exhibited reduced oxidation barriers and increased reaction rate constants.
