Load Coefficients and Dimensions of Raschel Knitted Netting Materials in Fish Farms

Heidi Moe Fore et al.

Summary: New types of fish farms require increased precision in structural design, with estimation of hydrodynamic loads on nets being an important topic. Uncertainties exist regarding load coefficients for nets and measured netting dimensions. This study includes new knowledge on netting materials with high solidities and scaled netting commonly used in model tests. Results from towing tests and the development of a new mathematical expression for local drag coefficients indicate that drag coefficients are not solely dependent on solidity and Reynolds number.

Development of a coupling algorithm for fluid-structure interaction analysis of submerged aquaculture nets

Hui Cheng et al.

Summary: This study implemented a coupling algorithm between OpenFOAM and Code_Aster for fluid-structure interaction analysis of submerged nets. The algorithm simplifies model preparation and improves the accuracy of structural responses. Experimental results show good agreement between numerical results obtained from the coupling algorithm and published experimental data.

Investigation on the drag effect of a rolling element confined in the cavity of a cylindrical roller bearing

Wenjun Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the flow characteristics and pressure distribution of cylindrical roller bearings with rolling elements moving in a fluid environment are analyzed using computational fluid dynamics method and experimental tests. The results show an increase in pressure difference, formation of vortex shedding, and the relationship between drag coefficient and Reynolds number. The drag coefficient is significantly higher than that of a two-dimensional cylinder in open space.

A numerical framework for modelling the dynamics of open ocean aquaculture structures in viscous fluids

Tobias Martin et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a numerical framework for simulating the interaction of nets with arbitrary geometries and fluids, considering non-linearities and physical interactions with the fluid, suitable for complex free surfaces. The framework enables the simulation of large three-dimensional structures and was validated against existing measurements for various structures in waves.

Finite Element Analysis of the Effect of Currents on the Dynamics of a Moored Flexible Cylindrical Net Cage

Zhongchi Liu et al.

Summary: A numerical model associated with wave-current interactions with a moored flexible cylindrical cage was developed using the finite element method. The effects of different design parameters, current speeds, and time on the cage shapes were analyzed from the finite element results, with comparisons made to analytical model solutions. The results suggest that the numerical model is reliable for the design of flexible cylindrical net cages for offshore aquacultures.

Numerical modelling of hydrodynamic responses of Ocean Farm 1 in waves and current and validation against model test measurements

Jingzhe Jin et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the motion responses of the Ocean Farm 1 structure in waves and current for offshore fish farming. A numerical model is developed to simulate and validate the responses, which will help improve the design of such fish farms for offshore aquaculture production.
