Does thermal stress modulate the biochemical and physiological responses of Ruditapes decussatus exposed to the progestin levonorgestrel?

Asma Mannai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of levonorgestrel (LNG) and increased temperatures on the clam's biochemical and physiological responses. The results showed that treatment with LNG enhanced the clam's antioxidant defense, but higher temperatures diminished most of the specific responses to LNG. Lysosomal membrane stability, alkaline phosphatase, and NADP(+)-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase were the most common signs of adverse effects in all exposures. The study suggests that chronic warming stress disrupts the physiological and biochemical parameters of female clams, which may have implications for the entire organism and populations.

Steroid hormones in the aquatic environment

J. O. Ojoghoro et al.

Summary: Steroid hormones are crucial natural hormones that regulate physiological processes in vertebrates; both natural and synthetic steroid hormones have been identified as widespread aquatic contaminants; experiments have shown that even at extremely low concentrations, steroid hormones can adversely affect reproduction in aquatic vertebrates.

Coping with climate change: Phenotypic plasticity in an imperilled freshwater fish in response to elevated water temperature

Lindsay B. Potts et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a threat to freshwater systems, affecting the response of freshwater fishes to elevated water temperature. The study on pugnose shiner showed that long-term exposure to warmer waters led to increased thermal tolerance and gill size, while acute hypoxia exposure reduced thermal tolerance. Evaluating interactive effects of multiple stressors is important in understanding the overall impact of climate change on species survival.

Effects of chronic sublethal progestogen exposure on development, reproduction, and detoxification system of water flea, Daphnia magna

Reka Svigruha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of progestogens in mixtures at environmentally relevant concentrations on Daphnia magna for the first time, finding significant impacts on molecular, cellular, and individual levels in both short-term and long-term exposures, including increased gene expression and activity of GST detoxification enzyme, as well as changes in reproductive capacity. Future research should focus on understanding the potential mechanisms underlying these effects.

Ocean warming reduces gastropod survival despite maintenance of feeding and oxygen consumption rates

Laura J. Falkenberg et al.

Summary: The study found that moderate warming significantly reduces survival for two tropical gastropod species, while not affecting feeding rate and oxygen consumption. This suggests that maintaining physiological rates alone is not enough to sustain organism survival under elevated temperatures.
