The transcriptomic signature of cold and heat stress in benthic foraminifera-Implications for range expansions of marine calcifiers

Danna Titelboim et al.

Summary: Global warming enables the expansion of tropical marine species into mid-latitude habitats, but they face challenges from cold winter temperatures. Cold tolerance may play a crucial role in controlling the zonal range expansion of tropical marine species. In a study of a tropical symbiont-bearing foraminifera in the Eastern Mediterranean, it was found that the diatom symbionts showed thermal tolerance, while the foraminifera host experienced decreased growth under both cold and warm stress. Furthermore, gene expression analysis revealed that under cold stress, metabolic processes such as photosynthesis were significantly affected, while under heat stress, changes were primarily related to movement and cytoskeleton functions.

Temperature effects on the shell growth of a larger benthic foraminifer (Sorites orbiculus): Results from culture experiments and micro X-ray computed tomography

Shunichi Kinoshita et al.

Summary: Research suggests that ocean warming may negatively impact large benthic foraminifers (LBFs), leading to a decline in their shell growth. Cultivation experiments with the porcelaneous LBF Sorites orbiculus under different temperature conditions showed that shell weight and volume were optimal at around 25 degrees Celsius, with decreases observed at lower or higher temperatures.

Decrease in volume and density of foraminiferal shells with progressing ocean acidification

Azumi Kuroyanagi et al.

Summary: This study found that ocean acidification not only affects the quantity but also the quality of foraminifera shells, as pH and temperature have different impacts on growth parameters. It is predicted that under the IPCC RCP8.5 scenario, both ocean acidification and warming will significantly impact reef foraminiferal carbonate production.
