Top-down control of a marine mesopredator: Increase in native white-tailed eagles accelerates the extinction of an endangered seabird population

Tycho Anker-Nilssen et al.

Summary: Bottom-up control is important for regulating marine mesopredators, but the understanding of top-down control, especially the effects of native predators on seabird populations, is limited. This study investigates how an increase in white-tailed eagles in northern Norway affected a population of black-legged kittiwakes, a red-listed seabird, and finds that eagle abundance led to declining breeding success and population size in the kittiwake colony, particularly under poor foraging conditions. The study emphasizes the significant role of top-down effects from avian predators in regulating seabird populations and highlights the need for considering these effects in conservation and management plans.
