Detection of faecal bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in biofilms attached to plastics from human-impacted coastal areas

Hongxia Liang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the abundance of faecal and marine bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from biofilms adhered to marine plastics. The results showed that plastics can act as vectors for bacteria and reservoirs for potential pathogens and ARGs.

Dataset of genome sequence, de novo assembly, and functional annotation of Ruegeria sp. (PBVC088), a marine bacterium associated with the toxin-producing harmful dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum

Grace Joy Wei Lie Chin et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the economic losses and human illnesses caused by harmful algal blooms in the coastal waters of west Sabah, Malaysia, revealing that the dynamics between bacteria and algae may lead to toxin production. The whole-genome sequencing of Ruegeria sp. PBVC088 bacterium provides researchers with a larger data set to identify genes and pathways related to toxin biosynthesis.

Associations between bacterial communities and microplastics from surface seawater of the Northern Patagonian area of Chile

Patricia Aguila-Torres et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics in oceans and coastlines has increased during recent years due to human activities. In this study, bacterial communities attached to microplastics collected from three coastal environments in the South Pacific were analyzed. The study identified different types of microplastics and dominant bacterial phyla, and found differences in bacterial communities on microplastics compared to surrounding seawater.

Insights into the bacterial community compositions of peanut worm (Sipunculus nudus) and their association with the surrounding environment

Ruzhuo Zhong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the diversity, composition, and interrelationships of bacterial communities in the peanut worm's intestine, coelomic fluid, and culture environment using high-throughput sequencing. The study found that the highest bacterial community richness and diversity were found in the sediments, and the coelomic fluid of the peanut worm contained potential probiotic bacteria. The composition of the bacterial community in the intestine was more similar to that in the sediments compared to water. Functional analysis showed that bacterial communities in different environments had similar functions.

Can we quantify the aquatic environmental plastic load from aquaculture?

Yichao Tian et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is a major source of plastic pollution, and this study developed a framework to assess and manage plastic loads from aquaculture. By combining different data sources, the framework helps to understand aquaculture patterns and estimate plastic waste generation. The study applied this framework to evaluate plastic pollution from oyster floating raft farming in China and suggested measures for plastic management.

Effects of microplastics on physiological performance of marine bivalves, potential impacts, and enlightening the future based on a comparative study

Robert Mkuye et al.

Summary: This review examines the effects of microplastics and their additives on the physiological performances and related genes of marine bivalves. Microplastics are widely dispersed in various media and their impacts are influenced by exposure concentration and treatment. Microplastics ingestion reduces immune system functionality, hemocytes count, distorts oxidative system and respiration, and increases energy consumption in bivalves due to physiological modulations.
