Coastal mesozooplankton respond to decadal environmental changes via community restructuring

Maria Grazia Mazzocchi et al.

Summary: Long-term ecological research in the Gulf of Naples has shown changes in the pelagic system since 1984. Zooplankton composition and abundance have undergone significant shifts in response to climate variation and local atmospheric forcing. Some neritic copepods have disappeared or decreased while offshore species have increased, indicating changes in the influence of open waters. Despite these changes, overall zooplankton abundance and composition have not significantly changed, suggesting restructuring within the community.

From Phenotypes to Genotypes and Back: Toward an Integrated Evaluation of Biodiversity in Calanoid Copepods

Iole Di Capua et al.

Summary: Zooplankton molecular analyses provide accurate species identification, complementing traditional taxonomy. This study integrated morphological and molecular identification methods to assess taxonomic diversity in the Mediterranean Sea. The findings contribute to our understanding of coastal biodiversity and lay the groundwork for future studies.

Integrative taxonomy confirms the presence of the enigmatic Lysmata olavoi Fransen, 1991 (Decapoda: Lysmatidae) in the Mediterranean Sea

Valentina Tanduo et al.

Summary: This study reports the first finding of an ovigerous female of L. olavoi in the Mediterranean Sea, confirming its presence in the basin and filling a gap in its published distribution. The species may have been overlooked due to cryptic habits, unexplored habitats, or misidentification with similar species. Phylogenetic analyses confirm its exclusion from major lysmatid groups and highlight the necessity of multilocus approaches to determine its correct phylogenetic position.

A bycatch surprise: Scyllarus subarctus Crosnier, 1970 (Decapoda: Achelata: Scyllaridae) in the Mediterranean Sea

Valentina Tanduo et al.

Summary: A new species of Scyllarus was discovered in the Mediterranean, which may have been overlooked previously. Molecular analysis results emphasize the need for an extensive update of the supraspecific taxonomy of scyllarids.

Uncovering the Composition and Diversity of Pelagic Copepods in the Oligotrophic Blue Water of the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Johanna Medellin-Mora et al.

Summary: The study focused on the pelagic copepods in the South Pacific subtropical gyre, revealing 121 species of copepods inhabiting different vertical habitats. The copepods in the shallow water had higher abundance and diversity, and were strongly correlated with water temperature.
