Linotrins: Omega-3 oxylipins featuring an E,Z,E conjugated triene motif are present in the plant kingdom and alleviate inflammation in LPS-challenged microglial cells

Laurence Balas et al.

Summary: Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and its metabolites linotrins have been found to exert neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory effects in chronic and acute CNS disease models. This study reports the synthesis of linotrins and confirms their occurrence in plants. The study also highlights the strong anti-inflammatory effects of linotrins on microglia and opens new perspectives for CNS therapeutics.

Neuroprotective effects of DHA-derived peroxidation product 4 (RS)-4-F4t-neuroprostane on microglia

Xue Geng et al.

Summary: The abundance of DHA in brain membrane phospholipids has been found to play a role in neurological functions. Non-enzymatic oxidized product of DHA, 44FNP, has been shown to have oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects in microglial cells, as well as neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative diseases.

Cardio-Protective Properties and Health Benefits of Fish Lipid Bioactives; The Effects of Thermal Processing

Alexandros Tsoupras et al.

Summary: The beneficial effects of fish-derived lipid bioactives, including omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids, lipid vitamins, carotenoids, and polar lipid bioactives, have been extensively studied for their potential in preventing chronic disorders, particularly inflammation and cardiovascular diseases. This article reviews recent findings on the lipid content, bio-functionality, and cardio-protective benefits of commonly consumed fish species. The recovery and utilization of lipid bioactives from fish by-products and fishing by-catch are also highlighted for their industrial and environmental significance. The effects of heat treatments during fish processing on the structures and functionality of these marine lipid bioactives are discussed, as well as the need for novel green extraction technologies and low temperature processing methods to minimize undesirable changes in the lipid profile.

Microalgal Lipid Extracts Have Potential to Modulate the Inflammatory Response: A Critical Review

Tiago Alexandre Conde et al.

Summary: Noncommunicable diseases and age-associated diseases are major global health concerns linked to chronic inflammation and poor dietary habits. Modulating inflammation through dietary components, particularly bioactive lipids found in microalgae, shows promise in combating these diseases. Further research is being conducted to explore the anti-inflammatory potential of microalgae lipids for preventing and mitigating chronic inflammation.
