Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Selected Red Seaweeds from Central Portugal

Marta Freitas et al.

Summary: Aqueous extracts from selected red seaweeds collected from central Portugal show antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, making them potential natural resources in a biotechnological context. This study reveals the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of twelve red seaweed species collected in central Portugal, particularly highlighting the potential of less known Rhodophyta species like Amphiroa rigida and Mesophyllum lichenoides.

Antimicrobial Activity of Red Alga Flour (Gelidium sp.) and Its Effect on Quality Retention of Scomber scombrus during Refrigerated Storage

Jose M. Miranda et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the antimicrobial effect of aqueous extracts of red alga flour against food pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. The results showed that the extracts had antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In a food model study, the extracts were found to inhibit microbial growth and improve chemical quality indices. The inhibitory effect was more pronounced with higher extract concentrations and longer storage times. This study suggests the potential use of red alga flour as a preserving strategy for chilled fish.

Antimicrobial Effect of Phytochemicals from Edible Plants

Efrat Hochma et al.

Summary: Current strategies for combating bacterial infections are limited, calling for new antimicrobial drugs and food preservatives with higher efficacy and lower toxicity. Edible plants containing photosensitizers may serve as a promising source for a new generation of drugs and food preservatives. The use of photodynamic therapy enhances antimicrobial properties in plant photosensitizers, offering potential for improved treatments.
