Biodiversity Studies for Sustainable Lagoon: Thermophilic and Tropical Fish Species vs. Endemic Commercial Species at Mellah Lagoon (Mediterranean, Algeria)

Costantino Parisi et al.

Summary: Lagoons play an important socio-economic role as a precious natural heritage, but they face risks from fishing pressure and pollution. This research focuses on understanding fish biodiversity, detecting non-indigenous species, and promoting commercial indigenous species in Mellah lagoon, Algeria. A total of 20 fish families and 37 species were identified, including thermophilic and tropical species. The study highlights the importance of Mediterranean species and provides detailed information for the lagoon's sustainability. It also contributes to long-term programs exploring the interaction between indigenous and non-indigenous species and offers a potential model for future studies.

Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) (Asian Silver Carp) Presence in Danube Delta and Romania-A Review with Data on Natural Reproduction

Abdulhusein Jawdhari et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on the invasive species silver carp in the Danube River, particularly the ecological risks it poses to the ecosystem under the context of global warming. By gathering data, the paper examines the entry of silver carp into the Danube Delta, the suitable water temperature for its growth and reproduction, as well as the species' nutrition characteristics.

Microplastics in fishes from an estuary (Minho River) ending into the NE Atlantic Ocean

Lucia Guilhermino et al.

Summary: Wild fish from an estuary of the NE Atlantic coast were found to be heavily contaminated by microplastics, with a majority of them being fibers and particularly high concentrations in the gastrointestinal tract. This highlights the urgent need for further research on plastic pollution in estuaries.

Fish Waste: From Problem to Valuable Resource

Daniela Coppola et al.

Summary: The global fisheries and aquaculture production has increased significantly due to the development of fishing technologies, resulting in a large amount of fish waste being produced, creating economic and environmental concerns. With the increasing focus on circular economy, utilizing fish waste could represent a sustainable strategy for a circular bioeconomy.

Comparative Fatty Acid Profiling of Edible Fishes in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia

Annabella Tramice et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the nutritional benefits of edible Malaysian fishes from Terengganu, Malaysia, while also conducting a taxonomical characterization and metal assessment. The heavy metal assessment revealed that the detected elements were within regulatory limits, and the fatty acids composition in the fish fillet tissues was comparable to species in similar marine ecosystems. High fatty acid values can be useful for comparing the nutritional benefits of these biodiverse and non-toxic edible Malaysian fishes.
