Possible Role of Docosahexaenoic Acid in Response to Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins in the Mussel Perna viridis

Responses of ABCB and ABCC transporters to the toxic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima in the mussel Perna viridis

Summary: In this study, the distribution of ABC transporters in the mussel Perna viridis was analyzed comprehensively, and the responses of ABCB and ABCC transporters to DSP toxins-producing dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima were observed. The study found that different types of PvABCBs and PvABCCs in P. viridis may contribute to the detoxification of DSP toxins in different tissues at different time after exposure. These findings provide new evidence for understanding the role of ABC transporters in the tolerance of mussels to DSP toxins.

Histopathological evaluation of bivalves from the southwest coast of India as an indicator of environmental quality

Summary: Bivalve molluscs are excellent bioindicators of environmental pollution. This study evaluated histological alterations in the digestive gland and gills of three bivalve species in ecologically sensitive regions of India. Prominent tissue alterations were observed, including tubular vacuolation, haemocytic infiltration, parasitosis, lamellar disorganization, and presence of prokaryotic inclusions. The study also assessed the presence of ten trace metals in the digestive gland. Seasonal and regional variations in histopathological indices were observed, with the highest indices observed during post-monsoon. The highest indices for all reaction patterns were found in bivalves from Vembanad Lake, followed by Periyar River.

Effects of dietary ARA, DHA, and carbohydrates levels on gilthead sea bream liver and intestine oxidative stress, tissue histomorphology, and gut microbiota

Summary: The present study investigates the effects of different diet compositions on the oxidative status, histomorphology of liver and intestine, and intestinal microbiota modulation in gilthead sea bream juveniles. The results show that ARA-rich diets reduce liver and intestine lipid peroxidation, while DHA-rich diets increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the liver. Additionally, dietary starch improves the oxidative stress index in the liver and has positive effects on glutathione and lipid peroxidation in the intestine. Fish fed high starch diets also experience hepatocyte hypertrophy and alterations in nuclei position. Compared to DHA diets, ARA diets result in reduced diversity of intestinal microbiota. In conclusion, high dietary ARA provides protection to the liver and intestine of gilthead sea bream juveniles, and the balanced ratio of ARA/DHA in the diet has important effects on antioxidant status and intestinal microbiota diversity.
