Physical and biogeochemical controls on seasonal iron, manganese, and cobalt distributions in Northeast Atlantic shelf seas

Xue-Gang Chen et al.

Summary: This article reports the spatial and seasonal distributions of dissolved trace metals (dTMs) including iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and cobalt (Co) on the Northeast Atlantic continental margin (Celtic Sea). The study found that waters on the continental shelf had much higher dTM concentrations than on the slope, attributed to strong contributions from riverine discharge. The combined effects of fluvial and benthic sources, topographical controls, and biological processes shape the seasonal variations of dTM distributions.

Basin scale distributions of dissolved manganese, nickel, zinc and cadmium in the Mediterranean Sea

Rob Middag et al.

Summary: The study found that the dissolved metal concentrations in the Mediterranean Sea are influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in increased surface concentrations. Atmospheric deposition is also identified as an important source of these metals. Regular basin wide assessments of trace metal distributions in the Mediterranean are needed to confirm or detect trends in dissolved metal concentrations in the deep basin.

Trace metal stoichiometry of dissolved organic matter in the Amazon plume

Martha Gledhill et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component of Earth's hydrosphere and its interaction with trace metals (TMs) plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycles. This study reveals that the biogeochemistry of TMs bound to DOM in the Amazon plume is primarily determined by the chemical nature of the metals.

Spatiotemporal patterns and influencing factors of dissolved heavy metals off the Yangtze River Estuary, East China Sea

Xupeng Hu et al.

Summary: The distribution patterns of dissolved heavy metal pollution in the ocean are complex and influenced by multiple factors. This study investigated the distribution of Cu, Pb, Cd, As, Zn and seawater properties in the Yangtze River Estuary, East China Sea. The results showed significant spatiotemporal distribution and identified three zones - estuary, nearshore, and offshore. Different factors influenced the overall distribution, with dissolved oxygen and pH dominantly affecting the estuary and offshore, respectively.

Trace Element Biogeochemistry in the High-Latitude North Atlantic Ocean: Seasonal Variations and Volcanic Inputs

Eric P. Achterberg et al.

Summary: This study presents dissolved and total dissolvable trace elements data from spring and summer cruises in 2010 in the high-latitude North Atlantic, assessing the impacts of biological uptake and volcanic inputs on element concentrations. The results show that deep winter mixing is a dominant source of elements, with atmospheric inputs being important for certain elements. Deep mixing dominating nutrient and trace element supply to surface waters may have consequences for primary production and the biological carbon pump in this region, especially if water column stratification increases as predicted.

Global Contrasts Between Oceanic Cycling of Cadmium and Phosphate

Saeed Roshan et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) distribution in the ocean resembles nutrient phosphate (PO43-), making it a proxy for ocean nutrient cycling in paleoceanographic studies. However, differences between dissolved Cd and PO43- cycling exist, especially across latitudes. The Cd:PO43- surface export ratio varies significantly and should be considered when interpreting paleoceanographic Cd records.

Water masses in the Atlantic Ocean: characteristics and distributions

Mian Liu et al.

Summary: This article defines the characteristics and distributions of major water masses in the Atlantic Ocean using source water types (SWTs), which are important for understanding the origin and mixing history of water samples. The properties of these water masses are described using six attributes, including conservative and non-conservative properties, and their distributions are investigated using the optimum multi-parameter method.
