Age validation in early stages of Sepia officinalis from beak microstructure

Airam Guerra-Marrero et al.

Summary: This study is the first to validate the early growth stages, including the first increment, in the beaks of juvenile cuttlefishes. Age validation of Sepia officinalis juveniles was conducted by comparing increments in the rostrum surface with their true age. A total of 159 individuals were reared at two temperatures, with age up to 31 days. The results confirmed that one increment corresponds to one day of life, and there was no difference in growth and increment deposition between the two temperatures.

Summary: Vertebrate skin is an important organ that provides support and protection. Lizards exhibit a wide range of diversity in the morphology and distribution of their osteoderms (ODs), but the factors driving this diversity are not well understood.
