Middle Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous stratigraphy of the northern Great Australian Superbasin: insights from maximum depositional age constraints from the U-Pb detrital zircon record

E. K. Foley et al.

Summary: The Great Australian Superbasin, with the Great Artesian Basin, is home to a large artesian groundwater system. However, the aquifer units in this area remain poorly studied, particularly in the northern Queensland sector. This study uses geochronology to estimate the maximum depositional age of stratigraphic units in order to improve stratigraphic correlations and hydrogeological modeling. The results reveal the need for further geochronological research in other regions of the superbasin, in order to better understand the evolution of eastern Australia.

Geochronology and sediment provenance of the Precipice Sandstone and Evergreen Formation in the Surat Basin, Australia: Implications for the palaeogeography of eastern Gondwana

Kasia Sobczak et al.

Summary: A new understanding of the palaeogeography and tectonic evolution of eastern Gondwana during the late Mesozoic is emerging, driven by the detrital zircon record of sedimentary basins. This study provides insights into the sediment provenance and magmatic activity during the Early Jurassic, highlighting the presence of multiple source terranes and ongoing arc magmatism along the eastern Gondwana margin.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

Pieter Vermeesch

Summary: In a recent review, nine methods of estimating the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks using detrital geochronology were compared, revealing biases in most methods. The Maximum Likelihood Age (MLA) algorithm, based on a binary mixture of distributions, was found to successfully estimate MDA with less bias than ad hoc methods. This approach has potential applications beyond detrital geochronology.

Quantifying and modelling the effects of pre-existing basement faults on folding of overlying strata in the Surat Basin, Australia: Implications for fault seal potential

Jianhua He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of ancient basement fault geometry on the folding of overlying sedimentary successions. Through various datasets and modelling techniques, key fault systems were identified in the Surat Basin, with some faults being reactivated during the Jurassic period. Three models of pre-existing basement reactivation were proposed to explain the variability in folding style.

Jurassic Arc: Reconstructing the Lost World of eastern Gondwana

Elliot K. Foley et al.

Summary: The tectonic setting of the Australian sector of the eastern Gondwanan margin during the Jurassic and Cretaceous is debated, with discussions on convergent tectonism, continental magmatic arcs, and rift-related extension. The detrital zircon record of the Jurassic-Cretaceous Great Australian Superbasin is used as a proxy for igneous activity, indicating short pulses of magmatic activity and juvenile crust or mantle-derived magmatism. Margin reconstruction suggests sustained continental growth due to arc retreat, highlighting the importance of considering cryptic records of juvenile crustal addition in estimating crustal growth rates.
