Research on the differential tectonic-thermal evolution of Longmaxi shale in the southern Sichuan Basin

Lei Zhao et al.

Summary: The southern Sichuan Basin in China has abundant shale gas resources, but the shale gas bearing property varies due to the multiple stages of tectonic transformation. The thermal evolution characteristics during tectonic evolution are the key to revealing the shale gas differential enrichment mechanism. The study compared the organic geochemical conditions and test data of Longmaxi shale in the Luzhou and Changning blocks, and recovered the thermal evolution characteristics using basin modeling techniques. The results showed similar organic geochemical conditions of Longmaxi shale in both blocks, but the hydrocarbon generation condition in Luzhou Block is greater than that in the Changning Block due to differential tectonic evolution.

Yangbo Lu et al.

Summary: Research on a drilling core from the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation in South China revealed detailed environmental changes and stages of organic matter accumulation induced by volcanic activities. The study also observed a shift in microbial communities due to volcanism, impacting the abundance of sedimentary organic matter, which is crucial for the formation of oil and gas reservoirs in the region.

Grain assemblages and diagenesis in Ordovician-Silurian transition shale deposits of the Upper Yangtze Platform, South China

Zhaodong Xi et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the diagenetic history, pore structure, and brittleness of the Ordovician-Silurian Wufeng Formation and Longmaxi Formation in South China, and considers the possible impacts of mineralogy and organic matter contents and assemblages. The study reveals that the Wufeng Formation is enriched in organic matter and authegenic quartz, which are the dominant types of porosity. The precipitation of authegenic quartz reduces the porosity and increases the brittleness of the shale. In contrast, the depositional porosity of the Longmaxi Formation is largely reduced due to physical compaction. The extensive authegenic quartz cementation and thermal maturation of organic matter in the Wufeng Formation enhance its reservoir capacity and fracturing ability compared to the overlying Longmaxi Formation.

Paleo-Environment Reconstruction of the Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation, Southeastern Junggar Basin, NW China: Implications for the Mechanism of Organic Matter Enrichment in Ancient Lake

Dawei Cheng et al.

Summary: The study focused on the Lucaogou Formation in the southeastern Junggar Basin. Analysis of sedimentology, major and trace elements, mineral components and total organic carbon contents revealed different depositional environments and organic matter accumulation mechanisms in the upper and lower units. The lower unit was influenced by primary productivity, while the upper unit was controlled by redox conditions.

Pore Structure and Multi-Scale Fractal Characteristics of Adsorbed Pores in Marine Shale: A Case Study of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale in the Sichuan Basin, China

Haijiao Fu et al.

Summary: Research indicates that free gas is crucial for large-scale development of shale gas, while adsorbed gas is also significant for sustainable development. However, there is insufficient research on the pore structure and multi-scale fractal characteristics of absorbed pores in marine shale, which limits the understanding of gas production behavior from shale reservoirs.

Diagenesis and pore evolution for various lithofacies of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale, southern Sichuan Basin, China

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of diagenesis on pore systems in different lithofacies of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale from Sichuan Basin, China. Different lithofacies showed varying diagenetic pathways and evolution of pore systems under the same burial history. Diagenesis played a crucial role in determining the final status of the initial pore space and controlling the distribution of migrated OM, influencing the development of dominant OM pores in the entire pore spectrum.

Carbon and sulfur isotope variations through the Upper Ordovician and Lower Silurian of South China linked to volcanism

Yanfang Li et al.

Summary: Pronounced excursions of carbon and sulfur isotopes during the Ordovician-Silurian transition are globally recognized, with volcanic activity identified as the main driver of these isotopic perturbations. This study highlights the crucial role of volcanism in triggering carbon and sulfur isotope anomalies during the Late Ordovician and Early Silurian periods, leading to significant environmental changes.

Geological Characteristics of Shale Gas in Different Strata of Marine Facies in South China

Yufang Wang et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the well-developed marine shale strata in the Middle and Upper Yangtze region of South China, with Wufeng Longmaxi shale gas being the only one developed on a large scale currently. The Sinian and Cambrian shale gases are still in the exploration stage. The different shale strata show varying characteristics in lithological features, influenced by tectonic patterns, sedimentary environments, and diagenesis caused by tectonic subsidence. This will have an impact on fracturing technology and effectiveness in the future.

Types of biogenic quartz and its coupling storage mechanism in organic-rich shales: A case study of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation to Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, SW China

Guan Quanzhong et al.

Summary: The coupling effect between organic matter and quartz plays a critical role in the analysis and characterization of biogenic silica in the shale layers of the Sichuan Basin. The presence of two types of biogenic quartz influences the development of organic matter pores and micro-cracks in the shale, affecting later hydraulic fracturing and well production. This coupling effect is a key factor for the high-quality development of shale reservoirs.
