Reconsidering Carboniferous-Permian continental paleoenvironments in eastern equatorial Pangea: facies and sequence stratigraphy investigations in the Autun Basin (France)

Mathilde Mercuzot et al.

Summary: The late Carboniferous-early Permian period was a crucial time in Earth's history, characterized by significant global geodynamic and climate changes. This study focuses on the Autun Basin in France to better understand the sedimentation in the eastern equatorial Pangea during this time. The research proposes a refined sedimentological model for the Autun Basin, reinterpreting the lower sedimentary succession as mainly lacustrine rather than fluvial and lacustrine. The study also provides evidence for a larger sedimentation area and connections with neighboring basins.

Biomarker and compound-specific isotope records across the Toarcian CIE at the Dormettingen section in SW Germany

Stephen Ajuaba et al.

Summary: The Toarcian oceanic anoxic event in the Southwest German Basin resulted in the accumulation of organic matter-rich sediments. Analysis of carbon isotope records and geochemical indicators revealed the presence of photic zone anoxia and enhanced activity of diazotrophic cyanobacteria during the event. Oxygen-depleted conditions persisted even after the event, albeit with reduced intensity.

Origins of hydrocarbons in the Geneva Basin: insights from oil, gas and source rock organic geochemistry

Damien Do Couto et al.

Summary: An extensive subsurface investigation is being conducted in the Swiss Molasse Basin around the Geneva Canton to evaluate geothermal energy resources and underground thermal energy storage potential. The study focuses on petroleum source-rock types and their potential to understand the petroleum system, providing a first appraisal of the risk of encountering hydrocarbons in the Geneva Basin. The analysis of Toarcian shales and Carboniferous coals and shales has shown a dominant Type II organic matter composition, suggesting that the Toarcian shales are the most likely source of the bitumen found in the area. The presence of gas in shallow levels at Satigny is explained by the large amount of faults and fractures serving as migration pathways for gas from deeper source-rocks.

NEW GEOCHEMICAL INSIGHTS INTO CENOZOIC SOURCE ROCKS IN AZERBAIJAN: IMPLICATIONS FOR PETROLEUM SYSTEMS IN THE SOUTH CASPIAN REGION

V Aghayeva et al.

Summary: The Maikop Group and the Diatom Formation are the two main source rocks in the South Caspian Basin and onshore Azerbaijan, providing important information on the distribution and characteristics of the source rocks through detailed geochemical and biomarker analysis in the Perekishkyul and Islamdag outcrop sections. The presence of steradienes suggests thermal immaturity of the studied successions, limiting the application of some biomarker ratios, while Re/Os data provide independent age dating for the formations. The study shows that the Maikop Group and Diatom Formation can be distinguished based on specific biomarkers, highlighting their potential as oil sources.

Carbon and Nitrogen Cycle Dynamic in Continental Late-Carboniferous to Early Permian Basins of Eastern Pangea (Northeastern Massif Central, France)

Mathilde Mercuzot et al.

Summary: By analyzing the organic-rich sedimentary successions from the late Carboniferous to early Permian, the study highlights the relationship between geodynamics and climate change during the late-orogenic period. Different origins of organic matter were identified, with high organic matter storage events possibly resulting from secondary processes.

Quantifying Multiple Erosion Events in the Distal Sector of the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin (North-Eastern Switzerland), by Combining Basin Thermal Modelling with Vitrinite Reflectance and Apatite Fission Track Data

Silvia Omodeo-Sale et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the erosion associated with Cretaceous and Miocene erosional unconformities in the distal part of the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin by combining basin thermal modeling with thermochronologic data. Different scenarios were tested, showing the necessity of deposition and subsequent erosion events to achieve estimated temperatures. The study provides new insights into the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of this region.
