The role of the molecular weight of the adsorbed layer on a substrate in the suppressed dynamics of supported thin polystyrene films

Weizhao Ren et al.

Summary: The adsorbed layer on a solid surface has a complex influence on the dynamics of nanoconfinement polymer materials. This study reveals that the thickness and molecular weight of the adsorbed layer strongly affects the segmental dynamics of supported thin polymer films.

Enhanced Glass Transition Temperature of Thin Polystyrene Films Having an Underneath Cross-Linked Layer

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of interfacial effects on the glass transition temperature of polymer ultrathin films modified with a cross-linked layer. The results showed that the glass transition temperature increased with decreasing film thickness and higher cross-linking density. The chains diffused through nanolevel voids in the cross-linked layer, leading to topological constraints and reduced mobility. This research provides an opportunity to tailor interfacial effects for potential applications in polymer nanocomposites.

Spatially Heterogeneous Dynamics in Supported Ultrathin Poly(ethylene terephthalate) Films Depend on the Thicknesses of the Film and the Adsorbed Layer

Jianquan Xu et al.

Summary: The surface dynamics of supported poly(ethylene terephthalate) films were investigated and it was found that the propagation distance of the substrate effect is a crucial parameter affecting the dynamics and chain mobility distribution in polymer thin films. Changing the film thickness or the adsorbed layer thickness can lead to a gradual change in surface dynamics and eventually the disappearance of spatially heterogeneous dynamics.

Surface crystalline structure of thin poly(L-lactide) films determined by the long-range substrate effect

Jianquan Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface crystalline structures of thin PLLA films with different film and adsorbed layer thicknesses using GIWAXD. A highly packed alpha-form crystal was observed at the surface at a crystallization temperature of 346 K, which transformed to a loosely packed delta-form crystal with changing film and adsorbed layer thickness. The substrate effect on the surface crystalline structure was elucidated by scaling the surface crystallization rate.
