Dual Thermo- and pH-Responsive N-Cyanomethylacrylamide-Based Nano-Objects Prepared by RAFT-Mediated Aqueous Polymerization- Induced Self-Assembly

Nicolas Audureau et al.

Summary: In this study, we reported a straightforward synthesis method for dual stimuli-responsive nano-objects using a RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly process in water. The tunable responsiveness was achieved through the copolymerization of N-cyanomethylacrylamide and a pH-sensitive monomer, acrylic acid (AA), and the particle morphology was greatly influenced by the core block length, AA content, and slight changes in the degree of ionization of AA. The nano-objects demonstrated complex dual responsiveness to changes in the degree of ionization and temperature.

Effect of Hydrophilic Monomer Distribution on Self-Assembly of a pH-Responsive Copolymer: Spheres, Worms and Vesicles from a Single Copolymer Composition

Junliang Zhang et al.

Summary: A series of copolymers with different composition profiles, ranging from an AA-BA diblock copolymer to a linear gradient poly(AA-grad-BA) copolymer, were synthesized and investigated for their pH-responsive self-assembly behavior. The gradient-like compositions showed reversible changes in size and morphology in response to changes in pH, forming various structures like micelles and vesicles.

Rational synthesis of novel biocompatible thermoresponsive block copolymer worm gels

Deborah L. Beattie et al.

Summary: By adjusting the polymer chemical structure, it is possible to create water gels with desired thermoresponsive properties in a worm-like structure. These worm gels undergo worm-to-sphere transition at low temperatures and can revert back to worm structure upon returning to high temperatures.

Probing Thermoresponsive Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly with Variable-Temperature Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

Georg M. Scheutz et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the initiation and visualization of polymeric nano materials using variable-temperature liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy. Temperature control in the liquid cell initiates the formation of amphiphilic block copolymers through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, resulting in self-assembly induced by dispersion polymerization. This technique allows for in situ characterization of nanoparticles and observation of thermal phase transitions, enabling the development and characterization of self-organizing soft matter with unprecedented possibilities.

Thermoresponsive dynamic BAB block copolymer networks synthesized by aqueous PISA in one-pot

Pauline Biais et al.

Summary: A straightforward process to produce well-defined dynamic networks of associative BAB triblock copolymers in water was reported. The copolymers consist of a hydrophilic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) A block and two lateral associative statistical poly(diacetone acrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) B blocks. The viscosity of the samples is greatly affected by the content of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAc) in the B block, resulting in the formation of thermoresponsive transient networks with maximum viscosity as a function of temperature.
