Backbone flexibility on conjugated polymer's crystallization behavior and thin film mechanical stability

Zhiyuan Qian et al.

Summary: Extensive efforts have been made to develop flexible electronics with intrinsically stretchable and soft conjugated polymers. The influence of conjugation break spacers (CBS) on the thermomechanical properties and crystallization behaviors of naphthalene diimide-based conjugated polymer was systematically investigated, showing significant effects on chain rigidity, melting point, glass transition temperature, crystallization kinetics, and crystal polymorphism. Increasing the length of CBS was found to increase crystallization half-time and affect crystallization rate, while crystallization also significantly influenced the mechanical response of the polymer.

Structural and Dynamic Disorder, Not Ionic Trapping, Controls Charge Transport in Highly Doped Conducting Polymers

Ian E. Jacobs et al.

Summary: Doped organic semiconductors are critical to emerging device applications. This study presents experimental and theoretical evidence disputing the belief that low conductivities in these materials primarily result from charge trapping by the Coulomb potentials of the dopant counterions. The research suggests that electrical conductivity in highly doped polymers is strongly correlated with paracrystalline disorder, rather than ionic size.

Molecular Design of Stretchable Polymer Semiconductors: CurrentProgress and Future Directions

Yu Zheng et al.

Summary: Stretchable polymer semiconductors have rapidly advanced in recent years, allowing them to retain their electrical functionalities under repeated mechanical deformations. They have achieved charge-carrier mobilities on par with flexible polymer semiconductors and even surpassed amorphous silicon. This is due to molecular design concepts that enable multiple strain energy-dissipation mechanisms while maintaining efficient charge-transport pathways.

Comparison of the Mechanical Properties of a Conjugated Polymer Deposited Using Spin Coating, Interfacial Spreading, Solution Shearing, and Spray Coating

Kartik Choudhary et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of pi-conjugated polymers play a crucial role in determining the stability and manufacturability of devices used in energy and healthcare applications. The morphology of the solid film, influenced by the processing method, affects properties such as modulus, toughness, and strength. Different scalable deposition processes result in thin films with varying mechanical properties, with solution shearing producing films with the highest modulus, strength, and toughness.

Understanding the Effects of Confinement and Crystallinity on HJ-Coupling in Conjugated Polymers via Alignment and Isolation in an Oriented Mesoporous Silica Host

K. J. Winchell et al.

Summary: In this study, the nature of exciton spatial coherence in conjugated polymer chains that have been straightened by encapsulation in mesoporous silica is explored, revealing the presence of similar spectral changes observed in crystalline chains. P3HT shows H-dominant aggregation even without extended crystallinity, while MEH-PPV exhibits enhanced J-character when aligned and straightened. The study provides a fundamental understanding of the effects of backbone straightening on the aggregation behavior of both H- and J-type conjugated polymers.
