ABC-Type, Bola-Form Giant Surfactants: Synthesis and Self-Assembly

Xiaojin Yan et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of giant molecules has attracted attention due to their fast phase separation kinetics and small feature size. However, there is not much study on multicomponent giant surfactants. In this work, a series of triblock bola-form giant surfactants with diverse functionalities were built through a modular synthetic strategy. These molecules were thoroughly characterized and it was revealed that they exhibit different phase separation scenarios.

Tuning phase separation morphology in blend thin films using well-defined linear (multi)block copolymers

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strategy of tuning phase separation morphology in polymer blend thin films by controlling the number of blocks in linear copolymers. It is verified that multiblock copolymers are more effective in reducing the size of phase separation domains compared to diblock copolymers. Simulation results show that the compatibilization behaviors of diblock and multiblock copolymers differ.

Expanding quasiperiodicity in soft matter: Supramolecular decagonal quasicrystals by binary giant molecule blends

Yuchu Liu et al.

Summary: Quasiperiodic structures in metal alloys have been found to be related to the icosahedral order in the melt. Among various phases observed in intermetallics, decagonal quasicrystal (DQC) structures have been identified in many glass-forming alloys but are still inaccessible in bulk-state condensed soft matters. By annealing a mixture of two giant molecules, a binary system can assemble into an axial DQC superlattice, which is comprehensively identified with meso-atomic accuracy. Analysis shows that the DQC superlattice is composed of mesoatoms with an unusually broad volume distribution. The interplays of submesoatomic (molecular) and mesoatomic (supramolecular) local packings are found to play a crucial role in the formation of the metastable DQC superlattice and its transition to dodecagonal quasicrystal and Frank-Kasper sigma superlattices.

Molecular parameters including fluorination program order during hierarchical helical self-organization of self-assembling dendrons

Mihai Peterca et al.

Summary: The primary structure affects the tertiary structure and determines the function. This study investigates the effect of molecular parameters on the hierarchical self-organization of self-assembling dendrons and demonstrates that hydrogen bonding can enhance the order of helical columns. The findings provide insight into the mechanisms of self-assembly and may contribute to the development of new functional materials.

Macroscopic Regulation of Hierarchical Nanostructures in Liquid-crystalline Block Copolymers towards Functional Materials

Feng Cai et al.

Summary: Liquid-crystalline block copolymers containing photoresponsive mesogens have great potential for novel applications in photonics and nanotechnology, thanks to their hierarchically-assembled structures and microphase separation properties. The periodically ordered nanostructures in bulk film of these copolymers can improve physical properties and enable advanced functional applications through supramolecular cooperative motion. Various micro/nano-patterned structures have been successfully fabricated through light manipulation of these copolymers, showcasing good reproducibility and mass production capability. Recent developments in synthesis and polymerization techniques have led to the design of diverse azobenzene-containing LCBCs, resulting in the creation of a wide variety of novel functions.

Fabrication of High χ-Low N Block Copolymers with Thermally Stable Sub-5 nm Microdomains Using Polyzwitterion as a Constituent Block

Shi-Peng Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, zwitterionic poly(4-vinylpyridine) propane-1-sulfonate (PVPS) was used to construct high chi-low N block copolymers (BCPs) with different neutral polymers, forming lamellar structures with sub-5 nm microdomains. The electrostatic interaction in polyzwitterion led to relatively high Flory-Huggins parameters (chi) between PVPS and most neutral polymers, facilitating efficient fabrication of BCPs. The sub-5 nm structures in PVPS-containing BCPs showed high thermal stability with minimal fluctuation in domain spacings upon heating.

Phase Behaviors of Multi-tailed B2AB2-Type Regio-isomeric Giant Surfactants at the Columnar-Spherical Boundary

Yu Shao et al.

Summary: The precision synthesis and phase behaviors of multi-tailed B(2)AB(2)-type regio-isomeric giant surfactants were successfully achieved in this study. The slight structural disparities in different regio-isomeric surfactants not only led to unconventional phase formation in single-component macromolecules, but also resulted in dynamic and rich phase behaviors in these macromolecular assemblies.

Towards achieving a large-area and defec t-free nano-line pattern via controlled self-assembly by sequential annealing

Tao Wen et al.

Summary: Utilizing the controlled self-assembling of a giant surfactant, a bottom-up method for constructing line gratings with sub-10 nm resolution has been developed. The process involves solvent vapor annealing to self-assemble the giant surfactant into lamellae structures, followed by thermal annealing to promote long-range ordering. This simple and economic approach results in highly oriented and defect-free sub-10 nm line patterns on a large scale.

Effect of branching architecture on the self-assembly of symmetric ABC-type block terpolymers

Luyang Li et al.

Summary: It is well known that phase boundaries of AB-type block copolymers can be deflected by designing asymmetric architectures. A symmetric ABC-type pentablock terpolymer was designed by branching B-blocks, showing control over the self-assembly behaviors through the length ratio of the middle B-block. Interestingly, a transition from spherical phase to gyroid phase without the cylindrical phase was observed, attributed to three complex effects including the branching effect, packing frustration, and bridging middle B-block.

Effect of crystallization of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane block on self-assembly in hybrid organic-inorganic block copolymers with salt

Gurmukh K. Sethi et al.

Summary: The study explores the influence of POSS block crystallinity on the self-assembly of polymers through DSC and X-ray scattering. Regardless of the copolymer type, POSS blocks organize into rhombohedral crystals in the polymer/salt mixtures, favoring morphologies with flat interfaces. The findings suggest that semicrystalline polymer/salt mixtures tend to form lamellar structures despite the asymmetric nature of the copolymers.
