Biodegradation of 3D-Printed Biodegradable/Non-biodegradable Plastic Blends

Shinhyeong Choe et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biodegradation behavior of 3D-printed prototypes made from various plastics and blends. The results showed that pure PHB and PLA/PHB blends exhibited significant biodegradation, while biodegradable/non-biodegradable blends had limited biodegradation. Immiscible blends showed partial degradation and antagonism to biodegradation due to phase separation and the barrier effect. PLA/HDPE and PLA/PP blends showed improved mechanical properties but resistance to biodegradation.

Thermally assisted 3D printing of bio-polymer with high solute loading with improved mechanical properties

Jigang Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a thermally assisted stereolithography process that balances the flowability and solute loadings in polymers for improved performance in 3D printing. The experiment demonstrates that the addition of PEG to PEGDA resin enhances its mechanical properties, such as hardness and Young's modulus. Compression tests also show a significant improvement in the compressive modulus of the resin with high loading of PEG. Additionally, cell proliferation experiments indicate that the PEG-loaded resin has higher cell activity. This research highlights the potential biomedical applications of the thermally assisted 3D printed resin and explores printable materials with improved performance.

Theoretical prediction and experimental validation of the digital light processing (DLP) working curve for photocurable materials

Yang Li et al.

Summary: An analytical model based on differential analysis was developed to obtain the relationship between UV light exposure time and cured thickness in DLP printing. Adjusting the concentration of UV absorber in the materials led to good agreement between analytical Jacobs working curves and experimental data. This theoretical model lays the foundation for accurate DLP printing parameters and enables high-precision printing of photocurable materials.

3D-Printed Enzyme-Embedded Plastics

Angelique F. Greene et al.

Summary: A simple and environmentally friendly approach using 3D printing techniques for thermoplastic processing of rapidly degradable plastic-enzyme composites is described. The composites showed different degradation rates depending on the amount of AL loading, with AL capable of withstanding high in situ processing temperatures. Degradation rates of the composites in phosphate buffer were found to be faster compared to externally applied AL.
