Chain Flexibility and Connectivity: The Uniqueness of Polymer Crystallization

Liang-Bin Li

Summary: The uniqueness of polymer crystallization stems from the peculiar characteristics of chain flexibility and connectivity. A local structure order plays a key role in the transformation of flexible chains to rigid segments with conformational ordering.

Deformation Mechanism of Amorphous Plasticized Poly(vinyl butyral)

Changzhu Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, the deformation mechanism of amorphous polymeric materials was investigated using ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering. A stretch-induced phase separation behavior was observed in plasticized poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) for the first time. The phase separation is influenced by stress concentration and the network structure, and the phase size increases with strain.

Abnormal brittle-ductile transition for glassy polymers after free and constrained melt stretching: The role of molecular alignment

Qi Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of molecular alignment on the mechanical response of glassy polymers by comparing two different pre-stretching methods of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). It was found that the width-Constrained Melt pre-Stretched (CMS) samples exhibited higher ductility in both the stretching direction and transverse direction due to more chain stretching and aligned chain density. Conversely, the width-Free Melt pre-Stretched (FMS) samples tended to experience more crazing during further deformation, resulting in weaker ductility.
