Operational Disruptions, Firm Risk, and Control Systems

William Schmidt et al.

Summary: This study examines whether implementing and credibly attesting to effective internal control systems will significantly influence the impact of operational disruptions on a firm's risk and market valuation. The results show that firms obligated to comply with regulatory requirements experienced a smaller increase in risk and decrease in market value after a disruption, while firms not obligated to comply saw an increase in risk. Therefore, understanding the role of credible control systems in reducing the impact of disruptions on a firm's risk and value is crucial for operations managers.

When Ignorance Is Not Bliss: An Empirical Analysis of Subtier Supply Network Structure on Firm Risk

Yixin (Iris) Wang et al.

Summary: By analyzing granular global supply-chain data, the study quantifies the propagation of financial risk beyond direct supply-chain connections and identifies structural network properties as significant moderators of risk. Findings show that sharing of tier-2 suppliers in supply networks significantly affects focal firms' risk levels, with a stronger impact as tier-2 suppliers become more highly shared. Causal relationships are confirmed using exogenous risk events, revealing the importance of subtier network structure and tier-2 sharing as key factors in risk management.
