Design of discotic liquid crystal enabling complete switching along with memory of homeotropic and homogeneous alignment over a large area

Yoshiaki Shoji et al.

Summary: We have successfully controlled the alignment of discotic liquid crystals by introducing hybrid side chains consisting of alkyl and perfluoroalkyl groups in an appropriate ratio. Large-area uniform homeotropic or homogeneous alignments can be selectively formed under specific conditions. These alignment states are persistent and can be switched by applying a shear force.

Molecular ordering dependent charge transport in π-stacked triphenylene based discotic liquid crystals and its correlation with dielectric properties

Asmita Shah et al.

Summary: The charge transport in discotic mesogens based on triphenylene core was investigated using the time-of-flight method. The hole mobility was found to decrease with increasing the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain attached to the triphenylene core, following an exponential relationship. Dielectric measurements revealed a correlation between molecular ordering and alkyl chain length, impacting hole mobility and permittivity. The potential applications of these compounds in opto-electronics as organic semiconductors are noted, despite the challenge of poor conductivity.

Ambipolar Charge Transport Properties of Naphthophenanthridine Discotic Liquid Crystals

Marichandran Vadivel et al.

Summary: A series of novel naphthophenanthridine derivatives were synthesized by N-annulation reaction, which exhibited columnar hexagonal mesophase self-assembly over a wide temperature range. The compounds showed ambipolar charge transport properties, making them potentially valuable for semiconducting applications in self-assembling supramolecular systems.

Enabling efficient ambipolar charge carrier mobility in a H-bonded heptazine-triphenylene system forming segregated donor-acceptor columnar assemblies

Indu Bala et al.

Summary: The study explores hydrogen-bonded C-3 symmetrical discotic liquid crystals forming segregated columnar assembly, with particular focus on a new heptazine core for developing functional supramolecular materials. Among the complexes studied, some demonstrate efficient ambipolar charge transport, showing potential for commercial organic electronics applications.
