Association of Coronary Artery Calcium Density and Volume With Predicted Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in South Asians: The Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) Study

Mahmoud Al Rifai et al.

Summary: Individuals of South Asian ancestry have a higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Coronary artery calcium volume and density can identify unique plaque characteristics in this population, providing important prognostic information. Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with CAC density and volume.

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and cardiovascular mortality: a prospective cohort study among 15.8 million adults

Sang-Wook Yi et al.

Summary: This study found a U-shaped relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality regardless of sex, age, and CVD subtype. The optimal range of HDL-C differs by age, and both low and high levels of HDL-C were associated with increased mortality from CVD, especially sudden cardiac death, heart failure, and intracerebral haemorrhage.

Plasma lipid profiles in early adulthood are associated with epigenetic aging in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study

Tao Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that elevated triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in early adulthood are associated with accelerated epigenetic aging by midlife. Increased epigenetic age acceleration may partially mediate the associations between high triglyceride levels and the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis.

Dyslipidemia and coronary artery calcium: From association to development of a risk-prediction nomogram

Jie-Sian Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between dyslipidemia and coronary artery calcium (CAC) and developed a predictive scoring system for prognostically significant coronary calcification (PSCC). The results showed a significant association between hypertriglyceridemia and prevalent odds of PSCC, suggesting that the proposed predictive model may be a useful screening tool for PSCC.

Association of Coronary Calcium, Carotid Wall Thickness, and Carotid Plaque Progression With Low-Density Lipoprotein and High-Density Lipoprotein Particle Concentration Measured by Ion Mobility (From Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis [MESA])

Indre Ceponiene et al.

Summary: Through the study, it was found that LDL-P measured by ion mobility was significantly associated with CAC progression and carotid plaque progression in the MESA cohort. After adjusting for established risk factors and traditional lipids, medium and very small LDL-P remained associated with CAC progression, and very small LDL-P was associated with carotid plaque progression.

A pilot study of the effects of crocin on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol uptake capacity in patients with metabolic syndrome: A randomized clinical trial

Maryam Saberi-Karimian et al.

Summary: A randomized clinical trial found that crocin supplementation significantly increased HDL CUC and improved serum HDL functionality in patients with MetS. The decision tree analysis showed that serum HDL functionality was more important than HDL-C level in predicting patients with hypertension. Crocin administration for 8 weeks was effective in improving serum HDL CUC in patients with MetS.

A Mendelian randomization study of the role of lipoprotein subfractions in coronary artery disease

Qingyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Recent genetic data has provided important insights into the roles of lipoprotein subfractions and particle sizes in preventing coronary artery disease, with medium HDL particles and small HDL particles showing potential protective effects against CAD. Further investigations are required to fully understand the role of HDL particle size in CAD prevention.

Serum HDL cholesterol uptake capacity in subjects from the MASHAD cohort study: Its value in determining the risk of cardiovascular endpoints

Malihe Aghasizadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated cholesterol uptake capacity (CUC) as a predictor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a population from north-eastern Iran. The results showed that reduced HDL functionality, as measured by CUC, was significantly associated with an increased risk of CVD, suggesting its potential use in CVD risk prediction and stratification.

Associations of HDL metrics with coronary artery calcium score and density among women traversing menopause

Summary: The study found that the associations between HDL metrics and CAC may vary by menopause stage and estradiol level. Different HDL subclasses may impact the likelihood of CAC presence and the stability of coronary plaque differently over the menopause transition.
