The not-so-dead of winter: underwater light climate and primary productivity under snow and ice cover in inland lakes

Andrew J. Bramburger et al.

Summary: As surface temperatures rise due to climate change, the effects on temperate lakes are expected to be more significant. However, the impact of changing snow and ice cover on lake communities is not well understood. This study investigated the underwater light climate and primary productivity patterns in six inland lakes in Minnesota, USA, under different water column properties. The results showed that snow cover not only affected the intensity but also the spectral signature of light in the lakes. The findings suggest that climate change-induced changes in snow and ice cover could impact phytoplankton primary productivity in sensitive aquatic ecosystems.

Environmental drivers of taxonomic and functional variation in zooplankton diversity and composition in freshwater lakes across Canadian continental watersheds

Cindy Paquette et al.

Summary: Canada has a fragmented understanding of the ecological status of its lakes, which are home to many bioindicators called zooplankton. Factors like lake morphometry and water quality significantly influence the diversity and composition of zooplankton communities. The effect of environmental drivers on zooplankton varies across different continental watersheds in Canada.

Warming winters in lakes: Later ice onset promotes consumer overwintering and shapes springtime planktonic food webs

Marie-Pier Hebert et al.

Summary: Research suggests that delaying ice cover onset can impact pelagic food web processes and phenologies, such as increasing algal resource and primary consumer densities in early winter, expanding winter-active consumer populations, and altering nutritional structure after ice-off.

The Changing Face of Winter: Lessons and Questions From the Laurentian Great Lakes

Ted Ozersky et al.

Summary: Climate warming is impacting the Laurentian Great Lakes and their watershed by increasing winter air temperatures, decreasing ice cover extent, and changing precipitation patterns. This review highlights the importance of winter studies on the physics, chemistry, and biology of the lakes, emphasizing the significant effects of winter conditions on the Great Lakes ecosystem. Understanding the properties and formation of Great Lakes ice, along with winter measurements of key parameters, are crucial for bridging the winter knowledge gap and improving predictions of future impacts.

Taxonomic and functional differences between winter and summer crustacean zooplankton communities in lakes across a trophic gradient

K. Shchapov et al.

Summary: Despite limited studies on under-ice zooplankton communities in temperate lakes, this research found that winter zooplankton densities are lower than summer densities across different lake types, with higher densities in eutrophic lakes. Zooplankton communities were more similar under the ice, with a decrease in herbivores and an increase in predators from summer to winter.

Loss of Ice Cover, Shifting Phenology, and More Extreme Events in Northern Hemisphere Lakes

Sapna Sharma et al.

Summary: The study found that lake ice-on dates are getting later, ice-off dates are getting earlier, and ice duration is getting shorter on average over the past century. The trends in ice-on and ice duration have increased significantly in the last 25 years compared to previous periods, with more extreme events contributing to the loss of lake ice cover.
