Unraveling the interplay between dipeptidyl peptidase 4 and the renin-angiotensin system in heart failure

Daniel F. Arruda-Junior et al.

Summary: This study found that there is an interaction between DPP4 and RAS in heart failure rats, and combined inhibition of DPP4 and RAS may not provide additional cardioprotection compared to monotherapy.

Vena cava presents endothelial dysfunction prior to thoracic aorta in heart failure: the pivotal role of nNOS uncoupling/oxidative stress

Patrizia Dardi et al.

Summary: The study found that the venous system in heart failure post-myocardial infarction (MI) rats showed endothelial dysfunction in the inferior vena cava (VC), while the thoracic aorta (TA) exhibited higher vasodilation. The TA also demonstrated increased nitric oxide (NO) production and enhanced antioxidant enzyme expression, which were absent in the VC. This suggests a differential regulation of endothelial function between VC and TA in HF post-MI rats.

Enhanced sympathetic neurotransduction in the superior mesenteric artery in a rat model of heart failure: role of noradrenaline and ATP

Javier Blanco-Rivero et al.

Summary: The study revealed altered perivascular innervation function in superior mesenteric artery (SMA) of rats with heart failure postmyocardial infarction, showing enhanced noradrenergic function and decreased purinergic cotransmission. The nitrergic innervation remained unchanged. The findings suggest an increased sympathetic participation on the EFS-induced vasoconstriction in heart failure, providing insights into the neurotransduction mechanisms involved in controlling vascular tone.

Empagliflozin Inhibits Proximal Tubule NHE3 Activity, Preserves GFR, and Restores Euvolemia in Nondiabetic Rats with Induced Heart Failure

Avio A. Borges-Junior et al.

Summary: The study showed that the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin is associated with reduced proximal tubule NHE3 activity, restoration of euvolemia, and preservation of renal mass in preventing heart failure progression. Additionally, dysregulation of proximal tubule SGLT2 may be involved in the pathophysiology of non-diabetic heart failure.

Urinary DPP4 correlates with renal dysfunction, and DPP4 inhibition protects against the reduction in megalin and podocin expression in experimental CKD

Acaris Benetti et al.

Summary: The study found that DPP4 inhibition can alleviate proteinuria in rats with chronic kidney disease and prevent the reduction of important protein expression. Furthermore, the urinary DPP4 activity may serve as a biomarker for renal disease and progression.
