Near-zero-dispersion soliton and broadband modulational instability Kerr microcombs in anomalous dispersion

Zeyu Xiao et al.

Summary: The advances in microresonator-based Kerr cavity solitons have enabled versatile applications. The dispersion of the resonator plays a crucial role in the Kerr comb dynamics. This study investigates the dynamics of microcombs in a fiber-based Fabry-Perot microresonator with ultra-small anomalous group-velocity-dispersion (GVD). The study discovers 2/3-octave-spanning microcombs in the modulational instability (MI) state and the first observation of anomalous-dispersion based near-zero-dispersion solitons.

Engineered zero-dispersion microcombs using CMOS-ready photonics

Qing-xin Ji et al.

Summary: In this paper, the development of a microresonator with reduced group velocity dispersion (GVD) due to a coupled-ring resonator configuration is reported. The resonator is integrated in a hybrid manner with a semiconductor laser pump to produce high-power efficiency combs spanning a bandwidth of 9.9 nm (1.22 THz), corresponding to 62 comb lines. The integrated hybrid system could be used in coherent communications or for ultrastable microwave signal generation by two-point optical frequency division.

Machine learning assisted inverse design of microresonators

Arghadeep Pal et al.

Summary: The high demand for microresonators with specific optical properties has led to the development of various techniques to optimize their geometries, mode structures, nonlinearities, and dispersion. In this paper, a machine learning algorithm is used as a tool to determine the geometry of microresonators based on their dispersion profiles. The algorithm is validated using experimental results from silicon nitride microresonators, with the Random Forest algorithm yielding the best results after suitable hyperparameter tuning.

Photonic Inverse Design of On-Chip Microresonators

Geun Ho Ahn et al.

Summary: The automation of device design in photonics has been revolutionary, but the design of resonant devices has remained challenging due to their complex optimization landscapes. In this study, we propose a framework that maps the design of photonic resonators to nonresonant design problems, enabling flexible dispersion engineering and high-quality operation. The effectiveness of this framework is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally.

Zero dispersion Kerr solitons in optical microresonators

Miles H. Anderson et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a new type of dissipative structure called "zero-dispersion solitons" which combine switching waves and dissipative solitons. These structures can exist in the regime where group velocity dispersion approaches zero and have stable solitary structures. They have the potential for generating wideband frequency comb spectra.

Counterpropagating light in ring resonators: Switching fronts, plateaus, and oscillations

Graeme N. Campbell et al.

Summary: The article characterizes the formation of robust stationary states in ring resonators with normal dispersion, where light plateaus are separated by two local switching fronts in only one of the counterpropagating fields. These states are due to global cross coupling and can switch from one field to the other by tuning the input laser frequency. The authors provide exact expressions for the distance between fronts and plateau powers, which are in excellent agreement with simulations, and demonstrate a high degree of control over pulse and plateau duration.

Pure quartic solitons in dispersion-engineered aluminum nitride micro-cavities

Shunyu Yao et al.

Summary: Pure quartic solitons (PQS) have been demonstrated as a new class of solitons in recent years, offering innovations in nonlinear optics and potential applications. Numerical investigation in a dispersion-engineered aluminum nitride (AlN) micro-cavity shows that PQS can be generated with the support of a well-designed shallow-trench waveguide structure. Spectral recoil and soliton self-frequency shift are observed in the PQS spectrum.

Switching dynamics of dark-pulse Kerr frequency comb states in optical microresonators

Elham Nazemosadat et al.

Summary: This study explores dark-pulse Kerr combs generated in normal dispersion optical microresonators and reports the discovery of reversible switching between coherent dark-pulse combs, shedding light on nonlinear physics. Additionally, the formation of dark-pulse Kerr combs is found to be associated with the appearance of another resonance, providing insight into the generation of microcombs with high conversion efficiency.
