POINT: Pilot randomized, controlled, preoperative intervention for nutrition trial in head and neck cancer

Kevin J. Sykes et al.

Summary: Several prospective studies suggest that pretreatment nutrition interventions before radiation therapy for head and neck cancer can improve outcomes, but there are no studies assessing similar interventions before surgery for head and neck cancer.

Summary: Hypoalbuminemia is associated with poor prognosis in hospitalized patients, regardless of their underlying disease. The study found that patients with hypoalbuminemia had worse outcomes during hospitalization and in the long term.

Summary: The study shows that malnutrition is an important prognostic indicator for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Factors such as older age, low Nutritional Risk Index, and adjuvant radiotherapy play significant roles in determining survival outcomes for patients.

Summary: This study aimed to establish and validate a nomogram based on inflammatory biomarkers and nutritional indicators to predict overall survival in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The results showed that the nomogram had a more accurate prognostic prediction than the 8th AJCC staging system.

Summary: The study aimed to identify independent prognostic factors for reoperation after surgery for a spinal epidural abscess. Six novel independent prognostic factors were identified through the analysis of two datasets, and multivariate analysis showed a fair predictive ability for reoperation.

Risk Factors for Progression of CKD with and without Diabetes

Xiaohong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify independent risk factors for predicting CKD progression to ESRD in patients with or without diabetes. Hypoalbuminemia, proteinuria, increased LDL, diabetes, hypertension, and CKD stage were found to be risk factors for CKD progression in the overall population. For patients without diabetes, only hypoalbuminemia was a risk factor, while for patients with diabetes, hypoalbuminemia, increased LDL, and CKD stage were risk factors. The final nomograms had a C-index of 0.760, indicating good accuracy and discrimination.

Parathyroidectomy for Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism: A Multi-Institutional Analysis of Outcomes

Aum Patel et al.

Summary: Patients with tertiary HPT undergoing parathyroidectomy have high cure rates and low complication rates. However, they are at a greater risk of persistent disease and certain complications compared to those with primary HPT. Despite these risks, early referral and treatment for tertiary HPT should not be discouraged due to overall low rates of persistent disease and complications.

Hypoalbuminemia Predicts Serious Complications Following Elective Bariatric Surgery

Cheynne McLean et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the prevalence of hypoalbuminemia (HA), compare complication rates among HA and non-HA patients, and determine the influence of HA on postoperative complications and 30-day mortality among bariatric surgery patients. Results showed that HA was one of the greatest modifiable factors predictive of serious complications, and strategies to improve preoperative serum albumin levels may reduce overall serious complications among elective bariatric surgery patients.

The effect of preoperative hypoalbuminemia on complications after primary hip arthroplasty

Yang Tan et al.

Summary: This study explored the risk factors for preoperative hypoalbuminemia in elderly patients undergoing primary hip arthroplasty, and its impact on postoperative complications. Results showed that older age, lower BMI, higher cardiac function score, higher ASA scores, and longer hospital stay were associated with hypoalbuminemia, which also increased the risk of complications such as delayed wound healing, pleural effusion, and pneumonia. Perioperative albumin loss was found to be related to not only blood loss but also vascular permeability and abnormal albumin metabolism.
