A review on the development of elemental and codoped TiO2 photocatalysts for enhanced dye degradation under UV-vis irradiation

Alam S. M. Nur et al.

Summary: Dye-contaminated water poses a global problem due to its negative impact on human health and the aquatic environment. Photocatalysis using TiO2 as the prime choice catalyst shows promise for dye pollution remediation, but its low quantum efficiency under solar radiation limits commercialization. Research has focused on increasing TiO2's efficiency through doping and morphological modifications to enhance dye degradation under UV-Vis irradiation.

Onion-liked carbon-embedded graphitic carbon nitride for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and dye degradation

Yuxi Shi et al.

Summary: Limited light absorption and low charge separation rate in graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalyst are overcome by embedding onion-liked carbon (OLC) structures in the matrix. The highly hybridized and electrically conductive OLC broadens visible light absorption, narrows the band gap of g-C3N4, and promotes the separation of photo-generated carriers. The g-C3N4/OLC composites show significantly increased hydrogen evolution rate and efficient degradation of RhB, demonstrating the potential of OLC in designing carbon-based photocatalysts for solar energy conversion and pollutant degradation.

Enhancing the TiO2-Ag Photocatalytic Efficiency by Acetone in the Dye Removal from Wastewater

Catalina Nutescu Duduman et al.

Summary: In this study, Ag-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using the sol-gel method and tested for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. The experimental results showed that the addition of a photosensitizer increased the degradation efficiency of TiO2-Ag. A parametric study revealed the optimal photocatalyst dose and methylene blue concentration. Acetone was found to modify the photodegradation mechanism and enhance the degradation performance. The recycling tests demonstrated the high photocatalytic stability of calcined TiO2-Ag material.

Pyrolytic synthesis of organosilane-functionalized carbon nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation

Feng Li et al.

Summary: The study synthesized (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane-functionalized carbon nanoparticles using a simple pyrolysis method and found that SiCNPs-2.0 exhibited better photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation under visible light irradiation. The enhanced light absorption in the visible region and improved photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiency were attributed to the high photocatalytic activities of SiCNPs-2.0.

Surface chemistry in calcium capped carbon quantum dots

Shihuan Ren et al.

Summary: Colloidal carbon quantum dots (C-dots) have excellent optical properties for various applications, but their photoluminescence (PL) mechanism and surface chemistry remain unclear. This study demonstrates that the presence of Ca2+ can interact with the surface functional group of C=O of the C-dots, resulting in a stable structure and high quantum yield. The pH-dependent photoluminescence behavior of C-dots suggests their potential use as pH indicators.
