Wetting States and Departure Diameters of Bubbles on Micro-/Nanostructured Surfaces

Junyang Li et al.

Summary: This study defines three equilibrium wetting states for bubbles on micro/nanostructured surfaces and analyzes the three-phase contact line profiles for bubbles under these states. The research also proposes theoretical models for predicting the departure diameters of bubbles in different wetting states. Competing effects on bubble departure in Wenzel state are identified and discussed in the paper.

How Coalescing Bubbles Depart from a Wall

Ryuichi Iwata et al.

Summary: Our study reports a new mechanism of bubble departure due to the coalescence of two bubbles, which can lead to a departure diameter much smaller than the traditional buoyancy limit. We demonstrate a significant reduction in bubble base area during coalescence, promoting bubble departure, and establish a unified relationship between departure diameter and nucleation site density by combining buoyancy-driven and coalescence-induced bubble departure modes.

Electrolyte Engineering for Oxygen Evolution Reaction Over Non-Noble Metal Electrodes Achieving High Current Density in the Presence of Chloride Ion

Hiroki Komiya et al.

Summary: Direct seawater electrolysis simplifies the process and reduces the cost of green hydrogen production, but impurities in seawater, especially chloride ions, can cause electrode corrosion. The CoFeOxHy/Ti electrode with carefully tuned properties shows efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalysis with an active site motif and enlarged surface area.

Delivering the Full Potential of Oxygen Evolving Electrocatalyst by Conditioning Electrolytes at Near-Neutral pH

Takeshi Nishimoto et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of buffer ions on OER performance using a model IrOx electrocatalyst, finding that the OER kinetics is more efficient with OH- oxidation compared to H2O. The research highlights how the presence of a buffer can significantly reduce overpotential and improve performance by facilitating local OH- supply kinetics.

Bubble growth and departure modes on wettable/non-wettable porous foams in alkaline water splitting

Ryuichi Iwata et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of wettability on bubble dynamics and overpotential in gas-evolving porous electrodes, revealing that changes in wettability lead to alterations in bubble dynamics and a significant increase in overpotential.

A membrane-less electrolyzer with porous walls for high throughput and pure hydrogen production†

Pooria Hadikhani et al.

Summary: Membrane-less electrolyzers use fluidic forces for gas separation, with low ionic resistance and simple design. A new microfluidic reactor with porous walls increases hydrogen production rate significantly and reduces hydrogen cross over compared to traditional electrolyzers. Adding a surfactant to the electrolyte further improves performance due to its effects on bubble dynamics.
