Corrosion inhibitors: physisorbed or chemisorbed?

Anton Kokalj

Summary: The traditional criteria for distinguishing between physisorption and chemisorption based on the standard free energy of adsorption are not very reliable. Chemisorption may result in a rather weak standard adsorption free energy, and more reliable criteria from first principle computational modeling studies are recommended.

Effect of Cerium Chloride on the Self-Corrosion and Discharge Activity of Aluminum Anode in Alkaline Aluminum-air Batteries

R. K. Harchegani et al.

Summary: By adding cerium chloride to the potassium hydroxide electrolyte, this study successfully reduced self-corrosion of the aluminum anode, improving the efficiency and capacity density of the anode. Increasing the immersion time of the aluminum anode in the electrolyte containing cerium chloride enhanced the resistance to self-corrosion and provided self-healing properties for the anode.

Inhibition of Hydrogen Evolution by a Bifunctional Membrane between Anode and Electrolyte of Aluminum-Air Battery

Yuxin Zuo et al.

Summary: This study introduces a bifunctional membrane to inhibit hydrogen evolution in Al-air batteries. The membrane, with hydrophobic and anti-corrosion functions, is placed between the aluminum anode and the electrolyte to prevent excess water and hydroxide ions from invading, thus inhibiting anode corrosion from hydrogen evolution. The membrane exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and can be used to prevent metal corrosion in other fields.

Aluminum-Air Batteries with Solid Hydrogel Electrolytes: Effect of pH Upon Cell Performance

Tonia M. Di Palma et al.

Summary: The use of aluminum anodes in metal-air galvanic cells shows promise due to its high theoretical specific capacity compared to lithium, recyclability, and environmental friendliness. The study focused on developing solid electrolytes based on xanthan hydrogels at different pH values to enhance cell performance. Acidic hydrogels demonstrated superior cell capacity and anodic efficiency, while neutral hydrogels had a larger electrochemical window with lower cell voltage, and alkaline electrolytes sacrificed anodic efficiency for a larger window.
