Pickering emulsions with chitosan and macroalgal polyphenols stabilized by layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition

Weihao Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of multiple parameters on the stability of Pickering emulsions stabilized by chitosan and macroalgal polyphenols. The study finds that chitosan concentration, chitosan-polyphenol ratio, oil-phase ratio, pH, and NaCl concentration play important roles in the stability of the emulsions. The results show that chitosan and polyphenols are bound by hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions at the oil-water interfacial layers of the emulsions, and the combination of polyphenols and chitosan has better ability to stabilize the emulsions compared to chitosan alone.

Toward a Practical Catalyst for Convenient Deaminative Hydrogenation of Amides under Mild Conditions

Laurynas Gausas et al.

Summary: Amide bond reduction is an important transformation for the synthesis of valuable alcohols and amines. Catalytic amide hydrogenation has attracted increasing attention due to its high efficiency and low environmental impact. We report a mild amide hydrogenation method that selectively converts 2 degrees-benzamides to anilines and alcohols with commercially available precursors under basic conditions.

Formation of n-Hexane-in-DMF Nonaqueous Pickering Emulsions: ABC Triblock Worms versus AB Diblock Worms

Changsheng Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential applications of nonaqueous Pickering emulsions stabilized by core cross-linked copolymer worms with mixed shells. The worms were prepared using seeded reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) quasi-solution polymerization. By chain-extending the worms in mixed solvents, core cross-linked worms with mixed shells were obtained. The as-prepared worms were effective emulsifiers for nonaqueous emulsion formation and their performance was compared with other analogues.

In situ imaging of the three-dimensional shape of soft responsive particles at fluid interfaces by atomic force microscopy

Jacopo Vialetto et al.

Summary: In this work, we demonstrate the in situ reconstruction of the three-dimensional conformation of microgels adsorbed at an oil-water interface using atomic force microscopy. The technique allows for characterization of in-plane deformation and visualization of asymmetric swelling in the two fluids. It also enables the investigation of different fluid phases, particle architectures, and temperature variations on particle conformation. These results provide microscopic insights into single-particle behavior of soft objects at fluid interfaces and their resulting macroscopic material properties.

Characterisation of runoff pollutant removal in biological retention systems by orthogonal experiment

Yu Shang et al.

Summary: This study used a multi-factor orthogonal experiment to identify critical factors and elucidate their mechanisms in biological retention systems. The influent concentration was found to have the greatest influence on effluent concentration, while the height of filter material and saturated zone also played important roles. The findings suggest that biological retention systems are not suitable for severely polluted areas, and their pollutant removal performance attenuates with increasing influent.

Superwetting surfaces for filtration separation of high-viscosity raw petroleum/water mixtures

Xian Jiang et al.

Summary: The petroleum industry generates a large amount of crude oil-contaminated water during production, and the urgent problem of removing oil and grease from crude oil/water mixtures has become a challenge. Filtration separation technology is considered the superior method for oil-water separation, but the separation performance of conventional materials is not satisfactory due to the extreme viscosity and complexity of crude oil. Advanced filtration and separation materials, such as self-cleaning filter membranes and materials resistant to crude oil contamination, have been developed. This review provides an overview of crude oil and crude oil/water mixtures, explores nature-inspired oil-water separation materials, discusses surface wetting theories, presents the most advanced materials for crude oil/water separation based on filtration separation technology, and reviews the conclusions and difficulties in separating high-viscosity raw petroleum/water mixtures.
